Hoka I’m lovin’ and feelin’ your groovy 94-97 memories vibe. I absolutely adored those years too, and the ones before them. Got into JA around the time of the NS tour and saw them a ton from then until the end. Even tho p4p first album sounded and still sounds a bit unfinished, the band was on fire and the shows that went along with it were filled with JA crowd madness and JA/P4P tribalism. I personally like GGU better - I think the band was pretty fully realized at that moment. But if you were there for the first album shows, you’ll never forget them. My first was at Roseland, with the complete surf trip tribal Orgasm opening into the utter watch out or you’ll get kicked in the fucking face pit of the band/title track to follow. I was at a rented beach house in Amagansett when GGU came out and literally drove from the ocean to this record store in east Hampton on a sunday afternoon - this was in the days when albums came out on Tuesdays and indie record stores would sell them to you the weekend prior when their shipment arrived. Listened to it three or four times on the ride home to the city. Blew my mind, as did the shows that followed, right up to the Roseland hard charger flea and Dave and i would for you fest, which I attended with my friend Jim the week his father died. That band had a way with title tracks and Roseland, at least for me. Relapse followed - Hammerstein in the opera box house right next to the summertime rolls stage throwing Kit Kats and Reese’s and joints at the crowd for halloween.

And that was it.

I’ve enjoyed a few moments since. Irving pre-strays was pretty cool. There was a jones beach weenie roast with stone temple pilots where both 30 minute sets had the two legendary frontmen in top form (all opening for some fake punk like blink or something). Just after 9-11 at MSG on jubilee was magical. But relapse was the end.

I’m so so happy with this. Other than Perry’s older sounding voice, it sounds like it would have been on a record with Hard Charger.

I was able to play it very loud on some great speakers and it was transcendent for me. Just a flood of memories from nearly 30 years ago when I last heard new P4P music. I’m so very happy with this and how much it maintains the spirit of an incredible band that was terribly underrated.

I love all of this. It definitely captures my feelings from that era. It was all so fucking important to me. Just absolutely magical shit. That ‘96 porno show remains my all time favorite concert memory. It was absolute chaos in the most beautiful way. I was trapped against the stage barrier and could barely breathe and just didn’t care.

Wow- can’t believe I just listened to something new(ish) from Perry that I genuinely love. Why did they take so long to record this?

The solo section is awesome and the bass part after it is great. Really makes me wish they did more than three songs

Yeah, it's kinda heartbreaking to think they could have been doing stuff like this the whole time.

I dug up the article where "Agua" was first mentioned.. Surfer magazine, Nov 1997. Jane's Relapse was fun but I guess the cost was the guys attention span didn't allow them to pick back up on the Porno stuff afterwards.

Over the past 20 years, I've wondered why Perry couldn't seem to figure out that he shouldn't be trying to sound like Bono with his vocals, but softer, and lean into the deeper register, at least somewhat. He does that here. It's much better than I expected it to be. A bit of a silly tune, like Dogs Rule the Night. Hopeful for some more interesting sounds on the other tunes they come out with (if they surface).

Really cute, upbeat and feel-good song. I don’t like the drums. Everything, everything else, I like. Well done to the lads.

Solo has some serious southern rock vibes goin on. :aoa:

I'm loving this more than I expected, and more with each listen.

I totally agree that it sounds like a natural progression of where things would have headed after GGU (knowing when it was originally written, but still). And considering when it was written (and the little iterations we've heard over the years), it still sounds really fresh and rejuvenating. I think I'm surprised about that the most. I think it also really helps that you know it's all four of the fellas captured again when listening to it too.

Warms the ears and the heart. Really looking forward to hearing the other songs. 👍

It sounds lovely, quite natural, like the JA B-team that is P4P. Amazing that it took this long to deliver something fairly basic that people would like. But that’s our Perry!

Do we really think three other songs will be released? Color me extremely skeptical.

I know a lot of people feel that way and totally understand it, but P4P were never the B-Team for me. They always felt like a totally different animal, more free flowing and experimental. Where Eric is a freight train, Martyn has a very eclectic punchy jazz vibe in his playing to me. Where Dave is a technical savant, Pete has that Jimmy Paige-esque "sloppiness" that emotes more emotion to me. Even Stephen brings a totally different feel in his patterns. And then Perry's register and feel is very distinguishable between JA and P4P imo.

Haha, it's what we've come to expect, no doubt.

I'm definitely not holding my breath but am still looking forward to "what may be". :thumb:

As others have suggested, why couldn't such a simply, pretty song have been released at some point earlier than nearly 30 years after it was first conceived. That said, there is a plaintive quality to Perry's voice that I think he owes in part to time. That deep register Hype references that Perry leans into more here. And like Hype, I see the link between this and Dogs They Rule the Night. But this song has more purity and/or joy than Dogs does.

The opening "hum" (?) that Perry does and then repeats seems in part reminiscent of the scat vocal improve he does at the beginning of Jane Says, but I also wonder if it's a cheat to avoid having to come up with more lyrics. Regardless, the few lyrics we have aren't bad. I like the word organization here, "cause when you look away/and back at them/they're gone"
and on the line about the girl on the bus, which I imagine is Perry's original bus ride out to LA from Florida: "on the bus ride heading west/she put her head on me/and just like that I was possessed".

My wife frequently, but lovingly, rolls her eyes at my lifelong commitment to Perry's limited, and inconsistent output, but I picked her up from the airport last night, played it for her, and as we were getting into bed, she was unconciously humming it.

I'm happy for them--especially for Pete--to have this and the soon to be released complete EP. The thought that a group I consider my contemporaries are heading out on a farewell tour is deeply unsettling to me. To the point that I tear up. So, this song seems even more poignant. Am hoping to make it to the SD show. In our 20s my sister and I saw P4P at least 5 times--seminal early LA shows and the Tijuana show, and she often paid for me cause I was drug using POS at the time. I hope to score two tix, and take her in February.

Much love to you all.

I can see this being a great closer to their set as a sentimental, bittersweet farewell. "I smile and swim away, you'll always be there in my heart." It's the first thing since Kettle Whistle from Perry where I feel compelled to listen to it on repeat.

I'd so much rather Perry sing about dolphins than forskins and penis heads and Etty's gaping vagina.

I definitely hear Etty's voice on chorus backing vocals. Great song though.

at :57 and 1:02 she first appears singing background 'Swim Away". next chorus too. Sounds good though! Song has a feminine vibe.

Maybe there are too much layers of voices and generic electronics but the song keeps a sort of freshness that has been pretty rare in Perry's works lately.

However, it makes me feel a full album would have been hard to achieve.

Even the solo lacks a bit of spontaneity.

But out of my high expectations, the song is good and it's incredibly sweet to hear that vibe again.
