Intro to Jane's

#1 Post by LJF » Thu Feb 16, 2012 2:16 pm

Since I'm relatively new to this site and all of the people on here, I was wondering how everyone first got into JA?

For me it was back in the late 80's I was more of a Cure type music fan. Listening to a lot of UK bands. I listened to some Jane's, but not much. Then an ex-girlfriend made me a mixed tape, remember those, and it had Jane Says. It might have also had mountain song. Then from hanging out with her I started listening to more & more Jane's. That is where my love for the band started, so thanks to JJ.

Watching the movie Singles around 1993-94 I always noticed that one song that plays in the movie (Three Days) but wasn't on the soundtrack. I only knew Zeppelin so well and for some reason I assumed it was them. Was watching it with a girlfriend in '94 and asked her if she knew. She said she thought it was Jane's or Porno so I started keeping an ear and eye out. I got a job at a record store a few months later in '95 and the owner had a painting of the XXX cover behind his desk. I asked him about and he said it was a Jane's album cover and his friend painted it because he was a huge Jane's fan. I told him I was wanting to hear more of them and he sent me home with Ritual and NS. It all sort of took off from there. I bought P4P s/t next and then bought GGU the morning it came out. Bought XXX a few months after that. Saw P4P in '96. Was stoked for Relapse but couldnt make it from Tampa to Miami for a show. Saw Jane's for the first time at Jubliee in 2001. Blah blah blah blah.

I catched the 97 Hammerstein show on swedish televison by accident in 98, big fan ever since. I had been traveling in India the year before and had bought a tape with Jane's there and I thought it was good. But it wasn't until I saw the Hammerstein show I really realized what an amazing band it is

It was about 1994, i had just gotten a stereo for my 13th birthday and with it, my first set of CDs.

My older brother (19 at the time) was a big Jane's fan and he gave me the Classic Girl single to listen to. I was into Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains and whatnot at the time, so what I heard wasn't up my alley.

After 2-3 months of listening to maintream rock radio, I finally got to hear Stop.

I asked my brother which album it was on, if he had it, and if i could borrow it. He gave me Ritual, and i promptly spun it start to finish and then ordered Ritual and NS from BMG or Columbia House in my next set of 12 CDs for a penny.

I was still just a casual fan till 97 when they released Kettle Whistle. I remember I had gone to see a Cavs vs. Bulls game and there is a mall connected to the arena. I hit the music store and bought Kettle Whistle for some astronomical price. It was like 18.99 or something ridiculous like that.

But Kettle Whistle is when i fell in love with the band. The live versions of the songs really displayed how powerful and amazing they were. And Slow Divers. Fuck. That hit me hard. I wanted all music to sound that fluid.

Between Kettle Whistle and RHCP's One Hot Minute, that is when I realized Dave Navarro was my favorite guitar player. He still mostly is, although i've since discovered quite a few others who seem to basically do no wrong in my eyes.

Had heard and read about them in local rock magazine "BAM!" and went to one of the Scream (I forget the name of the Hotel) shows during mid July of '88 where there were about half a dozen other bands playing that night as well and everyone had pretty short sets. To be honest, other than Perry being a pretty goofy frontman, they didn't leave a big impression on me. Getting pretty loaded that night didn't help either. It wasn't until "Nothings Shocking" came out and I saw them during their '89 John Anson Ford theater stand that I really got into them.

i credit kxlu and one of my friends cool older sister kinda chicken or the egg i don't recall which was first but her impact was big because my other friends would laugh at the music i liked until it would be on the radio and acceptable..when it was always fun to point out "ya that's the band you said sucked" lol...kxlu was huge because they always played the cool unsigned indi up and coming stuff and would hold cool show to see em and announce where stuff was gonna be which was huge for a kid without a fucking clue what was up in a big city like la..they always tried to have all ages shows and cheap shows with lots of band....musically for me personally my biggest thrills have been being played on the same station and being asked to play live on air...i first saw janes when they opened for dramarama in a club i could get into underage in 87 i do remember the old bams and stuff like PAND mentioned and always got a kick outa my same out of touch friends bashing the shit outa that "gay faggot band" that years later they too loved lmao...they were a super hit and miss band...sometimes they sucked and others just wow...to this day as much as i hate what they have become nothing can top what they were and no matter how crazy perry and etty get now that tarnish rubs right off whenever i listen to those 3 records

During the Summer my friend Dennis would drain out his pool so we could skate it. In the Summer of 1989 our mutual friend Eddie brought a bunch of tapes that belonged to his sister to listen to while we were skating. One of them was Jane's, only I didn't know that was their name at the time, because it was a recorded tape. I immediately fell in love with Mountain Song, so I started calling them the "Coming Down the Mountain Band".

It was about a week or two later when I was talking with Eddies sister that I finally figured out what the name of the band was.

grew up in ny. was into prog and punk in the late 70s. they sort of met in the downtown cbgb's bowie/fripp/eno/talking heads thing around then. was lucky enough to see pink floyd and the clash and zep and X and the stranglers and television and on and on -- name it from that era and it played nyc and we saw it. graduated from college in 83. two of my best pals moved to l.a. they got all up into l.a. punk and hardcore. and they met and became pals with bob forrest and his pals flea and anthony. all they kept telling me was about these amazing shows at raji's and the roxy and such including jane's. for whatever reason of circumstance, i missed jane's when they came thru nyc in the first couple of years but i had the first album and got NS the day it came out and knew that it was 'the one'. finally saw them at the two ritz shows the following year. and ever since.

i met bob f. some years later thru my l.a. friends and we're still good friends and when he speaks about that era in l.a. [a time during which, to this day, many say that his band thelonious monster was the best of the bunch], he still speaks reverently about how perry and jane's were the best thing going then.

My mom gave me the XXX tape and told me this was the new Zeppelin, so I best pay heed. This was 1988.

Back in 1990 we had a Britisch tv channel called Super Channel. In the afternoons they played non-stop videos, and they played day after day almost the same videos. Two of those videos were Stop and ANR. I thought they were both mindblowing. Next I bought the Ritual cd and the rest is history.

Kinda late fan considering my age :oldtimer:
Was a big Peppers fan and absolutely loved OHM. More than BSSM - mainly because of the guitar playing/player.... :hehe:
When Dave left, i thought check out what else he is doing. Jane's? At first listen i hated them because of Perry's voice  but after some time i began to like it, then love it, then being addicted to it.
Immediately got all their albums and a lot of bootleg stuff too.

My birthday '88 my mom took me to the store, I was 7 and I begged for the NS tape. She bought it and now I'm here. Never got to see the original band live she would never let me but I listened to NS all the time for a long long time, so much so she began to like it.

1992 (god damn, just after they broke up for fucks sake).... mate of mine played me Whores from XXX and I was hooked. got the CDs fell in love with the music.. Whores is still THE Jane's song (yes over three days) - it's got the bassline that snakes and weaves, the drums that rock, the rhythm guitar that is beautiful, the "lead" that is fantastic, the vocal melody, the lyrics about whores - something kinda taboo - the swearing... Bob, it's just perfect...

loved P4P first album when it came out, and to this day then saw them in Brisbane at the Roxy (got Perry's set list) + the Big Day Out (got photos) in 96...

Kettle Whistle blew me away..

Thought Strays was missing that "something", thought TGEA was missing that same something.. gee I wonder what the fuck it is.

My Time still gives me chills.. As does Three Days....

1988. Friend at school played a lo-fi Jane's boot on a crappy little radio in art class, which was recorded from a boot LP his older brother owned. Next I borrowed XXX from him on cassette. Then I finally heard NS. I was obsessed, and when RDLH came out it was like the second coming.

That must have been an awesome time, those are some great bands. The whole scene must have been pretty cool to be part of.

Yeah it really lights me up in a good way. It's a welcome answer to the negativity that surrounds todays Jane's.

This is still a good thread no matter how many times you see it cause at the very least it reminds us of why we've all gathered together over the years and forces you to think back to when JA were the ish...

1989 I first saw a little box article for em in some rock magazine...if memory serves all it said was that they were at that time recording a follow up for NS...it also showed the NS liner pic of them in the desert...this one:

Image

For a year or so I thought Perry was a girl cause of the look he had in that pic...so in 1990 when I finally met a JA fan in high school I looked like an idiot when I asked him if they were that band with the girl in it... :hehe:
The same kid dubbed a cassette of Ritual for me a week later and I took it home and listened to it and similar to the first time I heard RHCP (Good Time Boys) when the song was over I literally ripped the headphones off my head like holy shit...what planet are these dudes from...couldn't believe the bridge and ending of that song...absolutely a pivotal moment in my life and as much as they've gotten away from that it brings to mind how really influential the band has been all these years...

nice hats boys.

Really no one else is giving up how they got into JA? I know it has been done before, but feed a curious mind, don't be shy.
