The Wedge
Spent the first half of my day this morning down at The Wedge in Newport Beach. Surf along SoCal beaches is way up and I knew today would be epic. Every LA area news station had a broadcast truck down there and there was probably 300 - 500 people at any given time. There was even a fire truck and rescue parked on the street on standby. I'm a bit too old and out of shape to do it any more but it was just fun watching the body surfers (and a few board surfers) risk getting their ass handed to them. Here's some shaky-cam video I shot:
Re: The Wedge

still haven't found his body.

I don't believe sinep has a sister.
He's never mentioned any siblings before.

Someone's gonna have a nasty day at the beach this weekend when they bump into this poor guy's body in the surf.sinep wrote:my sister was out surfing this morning in sunset and got interviewed for abc7.

The last Summer (2005) that I did a lot of surfing/swimming, I was body boarding off doggy beach in Bolsa Chica and took a tumble in some whitewash and slammed into "something" that felt like a big tree log. I popped up outta the water and almost shit myself because I had slammed into a floating dead seal with a huge, obvious shark bite in it's side. Fucked my head up good and proper.

...grew up in so.cal... the wedge was always a place to go if you wanted to get nuts. there's no sand on the bottom; all rocks. not good, especially with a wicked riptide that produces good strong waves but with a hard undercurrent.
but it was also where i got lucky on my senior prom; living in a group home---but the optimist's paid for the whole shebang and that included a limo. got out to the wedge and at 17; i learned to love it even more.

The night I finished my sentence, I proposed to my future wife there on a full moon-lit night.jptm wrote:...grew up in so.cal... the wedge was always a place to go if you wanted to get nuts. there's no sand on the bottom; all rocks. not good, especially with a wicked riptide that produces good strong waves but with a hard undercurrent.

BTW, actually the bottom is all sand (which is the consistency of gravel) with just a few big 'fridge-sized rocks scattered around depending on the season. Because those waves break really shallow, getting pounded down into the bottom is like falling off a fast moving motorcycle on the freeway - you can easily get road rash without a wetsuit and there's on average about 2 - 5 people a year that get broken necks or other spine injuries even on small surf days.
