when i was young i wanted to be a letter carrier. i figured it would be good exercise and you can build a nice little pension and retire early. most of the housing developments around here have those dumb community mailboxes. my house now was built in the 60's and one of the things i was pretty excited to have was my own mailbox on the house.

I love hearing you say that; it's obviously a dying medium, but there's something so fun in getting (and delivering) something tactile, be it a card, a letter, or Larry's package (that didn't sound right! ) I often say that it feels like I haven't worked in 19 years, as it aligns so closely with my nature; I love being out in the elements, being a civil servant... a cubicle would kill me. But yeah, those community boxes blow, but I think along with going to five-day delivery, it'll be one of the few things to keep this Titanic afloat.

Yay! I'm glad the first gift was received by the Secret Santa newbie,Cricket_bows.

Great gifts, Larry! The testicle tea bag is hilarious! Cricket_bows will have to post a pic when he actually makes some tea with it.

Even though it's early, I think it's good motivation for the rest of us to get our butts in gear and ship out our gifts.

I didn't know you were a carrier, that was another job that I thought would be good to have, for the same reasons cricket bows mentioned. The only problem for that in Chile is that there are many, many dogs in houses and on the streets, and for some reason they love attacking postmen. It's not even a stereotype for comedic effect, I've actually seen it.

And Artemis is right, we will definitely need some wet teabagging pictures.

Funny, on CBC radio I'm listening to DNTO ( Definitely Not the Opera) and the topic of the show is...

" Signed, sealed and delivered: stories from the Canadian postal system"

The story is here if anyone wants to listen. I think it should work in US and UK,Europe.

I  the CBC! How apropos! I love radio stories like this, especially when they hit so close to home- thanks for sharing. Who knew cluster boxes were a scourge all over the world? (I love the woman talking about her mail 'root'; now I have two Canadian words ['aboot' being the other] that I find endearing when pronounced!)

Why do Americans think Canadians say 'aboot'? We don't. We just say the word faster and with less (or no) emphasis on the 'u' part of the sound. We say the word 'sound' like you guys pronounce 'about', though... But not house or mouse or douse or souse... those are all pronounced quicker... not like 'aboot'; more like 'ab't' or 'abuht' (but fast).

The 'root'/'rowt' shift is interesting. I don't know which one most Canadians say, but I definitely say both, indiscriminately, for no reason. Sort of the way we use weird hybrids of metric and imperial and British/American spelling...

I know we say the word differently than you do. You put a lot of emphasis on it, as if there's a 'w' in the word. I guess it's only confusing to me because the phrase 'a boot' and the word 'about' sound very different to me, and I'm pretty sure I say them differently. So I was trying to describe that.

Wisconsin's accent sounds SO thick to me... They pronounce their own state's name "WisCANsin". Their 'o' is a very short 'a'. So ugly. Sort of like upstate New York.

I'm waiting on something to arrive in the mail for my ss package to be complete. Only then will I be able to say, "Sent, Fuckers!"

I think my SS may have sent my package, but I never got it. And I checked a tracking number and USPS says it was delivered last week? I'm going to have to look into this. So if it was my SS, just know I haven't been rude, just haven't gotten it yet :hs:

If this package is totally unrelated to SS, then I'm just here bitching about the post office
