http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/ ... s-says-gay
Michael Sam, an All-American defensive lineman from Missouri and the Associated Press' SEC Defensive Player of the Year, said that he is gay in an interview with ESPN's "Outside the Lines" on Sunday.

Sam stated publicly what his teammates and coaches at Mizzou have known since August: "I am an openly, proud gay man."

Sam is eligible for the NFL draft in May. Assuming that he is drafted, Sam could become the first openly gay player in the history of the NFL.

"I understand how big this is," he said. "It's a big deal. No one has done this before. And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be ... I want to be a football player in the NFL."

In 2014, "Gay Man to Enter Workforce" has the everyday-occurrence sound of a headline in The Onion. But when the NFL is involved, it's a first -- and potentially a landmark moment -- in the history of American sports.
Do you think he will get any backlash in the draft?

This is the most ridiculous thing I have read today.

http://consequenceofsound.net/2014/03/t ... 6-million/
The NFL has stepped up its legal fight against M.I.A. On Friday, nearly two years after the singer stuck up her middle finger while performing in Madonna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, the league submitted an additional claim seeking $15.1 million in “restitution”, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That’s on top of the $1.5 million it was already demanding from M.I.A. for allegedly breaching her performance contract.

M.I.A. and the NFL have been locked in an arbitration battle since March 2012 when the league filed a complaint with the American Arbitration Association. In their new claim, the league says its seeking ‘restitution” for “the alleged value of public exposure she received by appearing for an approximately two minute segment during Madonna’s performance,” the Reporter notes. “The figure is based on what advertisers would have paid for ads during this time.”

M.I.A.’s representatives have since responded, saying, ”The claim for restitution lacks any basis in law, fact, or logic.” They add that the ”continued pursuit of this proceeding is transparently an exercise by the NFL intended solely to bully and make an example of Respondents for daring to challenge NFL.”

In their defense, M.I.A.’s representatives point to other Super Bowl Halftime performances that pushed the boundaries of “wholesomeness,” citing examples such as when Michael Jackson grabbed his genitalia while singing “Billie Jean”, Prince caressing his guitar neck “as if stroking an erect oversized phallus”, and Madonna’s own performance, which featured “scenes of very young women dancers (possibly not even of adult age) poised in reclining positions, with their feet and hands and/or shoulders planted on the ground behind them.”

M.I.A.’s team also noted the NFL’s recent implementation of a 15-yard penalty for a player who used the “N-word” in contrast to their $16.6 million demand from her. You can read her full response here.

M.I.A. previously said the middle finger was a “display of female empowerment” and a spiritual gesture to the Hindu Goddess Matangi.

I know it sounds ridiculous but if she was told what is and isnt appropriate during the half-time show then she is in the wrong.

I would be really shocked if charges are filed. It just doesn't jibe with anything we've seen from the guy.

However, I could definitely see him being naïve enough to get set up...

Regardless... really bad publicity and an unfortunate distraction for the team.

sounds like he didn't do anything illegal. he just pulled a dick move and tried to show his buddies his naked girl friend.

actually i guess smoking pot is illegal. stunner that professional athletes actually smoke pot.
The woman, whose name was removed from the report, told detectives she went to Lockett's Brickell Avenue apartment to mingle with Kaepernick and Patton and that she "mixed some drinks for them and gave them shots."

The players allegedly told her that, in order to drink with them, she needed to smoke marijuana.

The woman said the group then watched a basketball game, and shortly after she started to feel lightheaded so she went to a bedroom to rest. She says Kaepernick, with whom she has had a previous sexual relationship, came to the room and kissed her and undressed her, the report continues. She told police they did not have sex.

Kaepernick then reportedly left her naked in the bedroom. Shortly after Patton and Lockette opened the door and peeked inside, the report states. She said she asked "What are you doing? Where is Colin? Get out!" The men then left.

The woman told detectives she woke up later in a hospital not knowing how she arrived there.

The report did not detail why she was in the hospital.
