His burning the house down analogy was correct, except it was more like an apartment building that he owned.
"Hey guys, sorry i burned down the building and all of your stuff with it, can i crash on your couch?"
NO.
it's not yr stuff. it never was. it's no different than facebook/myspace/twitter etc. you don't own that shit, they do.
this is why i never took donations. people give $20 and suddenly they think they can be a mod or make decisions for the site.
at best, you gotta hope the owner will listen to you and take care of the site you post on. i did that for 10 years.
it'll be ok, you don't always have to hate. sometimes a change can be good regardless of hurt you are about the change.
Bullshit, Facebook and Twitter have millions of members. Xiola was a community with about 50-100 (this is a wild guestimate) active members. It was our stuff and posts, all of us, including you. If Xiola was solely a news site with up to the minute Jane's news posted by you everyday, it would be you putting tons of work into it and your voice would be the main/sole voice, in that case you pulling it down without warning would at least be somewhat understandable. It was a message board that we were all part of collectively.
Also, what decisions? In the 3 years or so I went on the Xiola board I only remember Larry being banned, it's not like you were moderating posts like Mike does on JA.org, there wasn't a ton of moderation. The only real changes I saw to the board were "the foreskin of jane's addiction" and "jane's addiction is dead."
my point being it was my site. don't be under any illusions that you or anyone else had partial stock in xiola.org -- you only visited and you definitely weren't there for 10 years.
think of it as a bar. and even that's bad comparison, considering no one was paying, but me. if i close it, i don't owe you anything for coming and drinking my beer.
as for decisions, there were many decisions going on. i often PM'ed people to tell them to cool it or ignore a certain person. some one might send me a PM to complain about a person or a thread and i'd have to address that.
there is more going on that you would think and if you aren't doing it, you can't imagine how many different things it takes to keep going for that long.
updating news is fucking easy.
just set google up to send you news articles about jane's addiction, perry farrell, dave navarro and yr half way there. then just repost what it sends ya. if you want you could add porno for pyros, peter distefano, eric avery, stephen perkins or various projects.
if you wanna get real detailed like mike and heidi, you friend the members of jane's addiction on facebook and twitter and wait for the contributions to roll in from various fans tagging photos or just sending them via twitter. or just do regular searches on twitter for those some subjects: jane's addiction, perry farrell, dave navarro and you'll find the odd photo or flyer.
then go to flickr and do "recent" searches for those same subjects. go to google books and search for articles containing those phrases or LA mags that came our around the dates of certain shows.
all of this stuff takes time, but it's not difficult. mike and heidi just have that drive to spend the time looking over shit. i did it once, way back and i had regular updates and it's all very rewarding.
it's petty shit on these message boards that will bog you down. i suggest you start a message board and walk in those shoes before you spout off about shit you know nothing about.
