Local farms are good. But then you have to make sure the butchering is done according to federal standards. I think I opened a can of worms here. The intent is what I mean. There are local farms that do have "free range" chickens where they are in a yard and are not fed corn...if inspections and websites and PR are false... then what the hell else can i do? I don't care beyond that......
I'm on your side as far as eating healthier goes... I just try to temper it so that people don't get put off... I'm not a very "lifestyle" oriented person, but I obsess over consistency, so I have trouble with whole idea of adopting a label like 'vegetarian' or 'vegan'... just do what you can... probably you should try not to buy stuff made in sweat-shops either.
