What's the price of gas where you are?

#1 Post by Artemis » Wed Apr 04, 2012 1:15 pm

The price just went up to $1.40/litre and is expected to go up again. From last year that's an increase of 8%.

People are squawking, but I don't think that's too much. Compared with UK and Europe it's a bargain!

For creep: 1 US gallon = 3.78541178 litres

$5.30 per gallon

$5.30 per gallon
$1.7 per litre here.
$6.43 per gallon.

And roughly 90% of Chile's households live with less than $1,500 per month.

luckily i haven't had to pay for my own gas for five years. gas in california is around $4.40ish. people complain but gas is cheaper in the united states than pretty much everywhere. we just need to learn to drive less. i say this as i just got back driving home from seattle. :conf:

Why should "we" drive less? How about "they (government)" invest in alternative energy and stop going to war for oil AND really regulate the oil companies, instead of the pretend way they regulate them now.

Pretty ridiculous that we need to change when "they" are at fault for the high price of gas.

oh come on...we are the laziest country around. everyone drives everywhere. we would be better off if we drove less. i'm as guilty as everyone though.

do you really believe it's the govt's responsibility regulate gas prices? what about that extra 50 cents in taxes a gallon you pay? i wonder if hokahey agrees with you?

We've fought bloody wars and revolutions to become the laziest country in the world. We pay a lot of taxes so that we can be the laziest country in the world.

Why on earth do you think we should give that up and return to the middle ages when everything was MUCH more dificult?

 is driving less going to bring us to the middle ages?

i didn't say we shouldn't drive anymore. i live two blocks from the grocery store. i could walk or ride my bike there. :noclue:

every mother doesn't necessarily need a suv. it's just the way we are and when gas hits $6 a gallon you will see people drive less.

Your arguement flucuates all over the board.

1st: we "should" drive less

then

2nd: Just don't drive an SUV

then

3rd: when gas gets so expensive that'll force us to drive less

which is it?

This is really good. Started out slow, but has turned into one of my most favorite travel writing books, excellent travel journal with comprehensive historical context.
I suppose it helps that I really want to visit Samarkand and am going to Mongolia in the summer.

Awesome! If you make it through the book I will be so proud of you! Be forewarned, the first 40 -60 pages are slow. There are Russian prostitutes and boys with guns before that though... [edit- good starting at pg 34] but once he gets to Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) It gets really, really good. Just skip ahead if you have to. I am only halfway done but can't really put it down.....

I guess to make it topical. We should all just get a horse. :noclue:

I didn't say it was right of us to do that but that's in the past.

I mean, what did you think we did all that fighting and killing for anyway, to make ours lives MORE difficult?

I agree, a lot of the shit this country has done has been wrong, hell starting right off the bat with killing the indians, but since all that is in the past am I not suppose to enjoy the spoils of that?

Don't forget Larry B (with your obvious anti-america attitude) that although we have done many terrible things we are also very hard workers and have built this country into what it is today, for right or wrong.

Now, where did I leave my snuggie?

I'm not against people working hard. I'm against a country that makes some of their people work 3 jobs so that they can barely ask for credits to feed their family and pay for medicine and education.

Also, as a country, nothing in your present modifies your past. That's like saying 'Hey, I love raping puppies and then feeding them to the elderly, but I'm great with children!'
I can't judge you or any other human being for being born in certain country and enjoying what they have. What I can do is judge someone who thinks the United States is an ethical country who takes good care of their people and it's the savior of the world.

And it's not like the United States have put their imperialism in the past. It's ever-present.

I bike to work now. About 8 miles at the most. Some days it sucks, but it's quicker for me and I'm healthier. But I have alternatives.

The US is facing a problem but it's not feeling the problem to the extreme other countries are yet. The US has cheaper gas. The government has little control over the prices. However the oil industry has effected the way government promoted alternatives, in dumping special interest money into politics. Oil squashed out the rail system being the main transportation instead of the highway system with money in politics. We American's are hooked on gas and cars, because yes, we can be selfish and lazy, but there really aren't a whole lot of other options. Also, the US is a larger area and younger than most countries. We expanded quickly and urban sprawl has made it were most people commute or work further and further from their homes. When shit does get really bad, we are fucked more than many other countries, and people will have to change the way they live. Until then, people need to quit bitching and take a look in the mirror.

Buy a smaller car.
Work closer to home.
Get a different job.
Pressure the government to give alternative incentives.
Support and vote yes for budgeting in public transportation.

Your ignorance is really on full display here. I don't know why you are so concerned with US blood and treasure. As for imperialism there is an argument to be made in favor of policing the world as well. Look at Libya. Don't get me wrong, I marched in NYC with a million others in strong opposition to the second Iraq war, but I have met a half dozen refugees from Iraq and they have all stated that Saddam had to go, the country was generally stable but he was killing their people. They all supported the US invasion. Not cut and dry as you seem to so simply to make it....

See? 'Policing the world'... I mean, what the fuck is that? The US doesn't police the world, it protects its economic interests by means of war or destabilization.

You have met refugees from Iraq and they told you Saddam had to go. How many Americans have you met who had said that Obama has to go? Or that Bush had to go? Or Chaney? Why don't you go on a full scale attack on your own murderers? Unless you think Bush/Chaney and Obama's governments have not killed their own people.

Destabilization is a trademark of the US. It happened in Chile and Cuba and it's happening in Libya, Syria, Iran and who knows where else. Is it because they care?! SURE! Because they care about socialism not working (i.e., Chile 1970-1973 and Cuba) and they really (really) care about oil.

Have you ever played the board game Risk? What the US is doing right now is like when you tried to expand your empire but left a bunch of countries with only 1 troop. The US is bankrupt, but it'll try to stretch anyway so that it can conquer a continent on the board and get 10 reinforcements the next turn.

And once again, I'll insist: it's not so much about all Americans as it's about their political and military leaders and the bunch of people who eat their bullshit and fully support them no matter what.
