Boats

#1 Post by SR » Tue Jun 05, 2012 2:01 pm

Kinda an offshoot of the thinkin thread, so I've been looking at boats recently. Mnay seem excellent and the ones that would manage/navigate some distances with sleepers seem quite affordable.

Anyone done anything like this or have horror stories of boats.....good experiences?

Somewhat tangential, but I have seafaring blood in me (grandfather was a merchant marine in WWII, parent grew up sailing), and have never had the chance to learn. I have also discovered that I don't get seasick. So, I live right by the water here and have discovered that there's a shop that'll give you a 3 hour training session on a small sailboat so you can take it out on your own, and I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about paying for that... the idea of working on some stuff over the summer in the middle of the water for a few hours seems idyllic. If I manage to figure this out, I suppose I could post here relevantly.

most didn't survive that. it's amazing how many merchant ships were sunk by japanese subs. it's also amazing how fast the merchant ships were built at that time.

take the sailing class. you will get hooked. i took sailing all through college and have sailed many time on some pretty big boats.

I just got back from MDR.....it's a couple of miles from where I live. creep, I am definately looking at power boats. I had an opportunity to speak with a gent who was working on his Seaswirl 23 (ft). I t was beautiful. Volvo/Penta 5.0 8 cyl.....he said it was excelent for families and fishing alike as well as long trips....sleeps 2 very comfortably.

kv, I am cpr certified, but in my minds eye, I am thinking of loading up some books and seeing some new places solo.

The Seaswirl seeems a bit opulent for me and am thinking in the 15 to 20k range. I would need sleeper accomodations and I'd like it to be able to navigate safely from here to the islands and ports here in southern and central california......or further.

i would look for a trawler with diesel engine. they have a lot of range but you get there slower than a gas boat. you save a shitload on gas though.

something like this

http://ventura.craigslist.org/boa/2992211839.html

you could take that fucker to mexico.

but it looks like you are looking for a trailerable boat. most trawlers you would have to keep in a marina but what is better that spending the weekend on your boat at the marina?

Wow that's huge and sexy as all get up. I am hearing boatrader is a good place to start too.....ebay, and craigslist of course. The thought of buying a machine sight unseen scares the shit out of me as well. But like this guy said at the marina, it's a buyers market.

yeah they run forever and are very efficient. most sailboats come with a small diesel and are cheap. i would even look at sail and just motor it around until you get comfortable with sailing.

boattrader is not the place it used to be.

this is really the place to look these days. it's mostly brokered boats but nothing wrong with buying from a broker. they are usually pretty knowledgeable.

yeah nice but limited range. two huge gas engines plus $1200 to fill up the tank. all your money would go to gas.
