HBO’s Mommy Dead and Dearest is a perfect storm of true crime, pageantry, and Southern gothic tropes

HBO’s true crime doc explores the real-life horror of Munchausen by proxy.

Things are not always as they appear, especially in the case of Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard. Child Abuse, mental illness, and forbidden love converge in this mystery involving a mother and daughter who were thought to be living a fairy tale life that turned out to be a living nightmare.

What starts out as a grisly tale of matricide morphs into a rabbit hole of deception and unrelenting abuse, journeying towards the truth about what happened that night. Featuring exclusive access to Gypsy from prison and a trove of police interrogation tapes, medical records, and secret conversations, this HBO Documentary Film is a disturbing, first-hand look at a life arrested and the consequences of trying to keep someone young forever.

One of the craziest documentaries I've ever watched. I'm no fan of murder (who is?) but if anyone ever deserved what they got, it was this poor girls mother. You should do yourself a favor and try to watch this.

I just watched this. Heartbreaking. So many people are culpable for the abuse suffered by that girl. Did this story make the national news? I didn't know anything about this story until I read the info posted above.

You can watch the whole thing on HBO Go I believe.

I just watched Tour De Pharmacy and I know someone on this board was a big Lance hater but he is hilarious in that movie.

Artemis wrote:creep, you really have to watch Quarry. It's only 8 episodes, season finale was last night. I think it's one of the best shows I have watched all year. The acting, directing, story and camera work are excellent. Last night's finale was close to perfection for tying up loose ends; it left the viewer satisfied. The entire series was directed by one director, Greg Yaitanes. Oh, and the music in the show is pretty great too.

Here's an example of the music. This is a cover of Sam &Dave tune. The show is set in early 70s Memphis.

Quarry was a good show. It sucks it didn't get renewed or picked up by another network. Thanks for the recommendation. I saw it during the free week its network had recently.

I know it's old, but is The West Wing worth watching?

Yeah...it's pretty good. I'm not a Marc Maron fan at all but he is really good in this. Alison Brie topless is a nice bonus too.

The first episode of The Sinner was pretty good. Definitely worth a watch...

The show is based on a book by a German author, Petra Hammesfahr.
THE SINNER STARRING JESSICA BIEL AND BILL PULLMAN AIRS NEW EPISODES WEDNESDAYS AT 10/9c!
An eight episode close-ended series, The Sinner follows a young mother (Jessica Biel) who, when overcome by an inexplicable fit of rage, commits a startling act of violence and to her horror has no idea why. The event launches an inverted and utterly surprising crime thriller whose driving force is not the “who” or the “what” -- but the “why” -- as an investigator (Bill Pullman) finds himself obsessed with uncovering the woman's buried motive. Together they travel a harrowing journey into the depths of her psyche and the violent secrets hidden in her past. New episodes of The Sinner air Wednesdays at 10/9c on USA.

I broke down and watched one of the curb your enthusiasm leaked episodes. It was just average...not great. I am going to try and hold off on watching any more.

I'm trying to slog through the final season of The Strain in 2-3 episode chunks and the only one I've remotely liked was the one from a couple weeks ago with Eichorst and Setrakian(sp?) in the medical research/baby harvesting facility.

Preacher is almost more frustrating - it's like they are trying to be a more action-oriented version of Twin Peaks with lotsa weird oddball shit but they've screwed up the characters and plot so badly, it's not even fun in a "True Blood" campy way anymore.

Five years ago I was really excited that there might be a 9th season (i.e., one year after season 8 ended). Now, I don't see how it will make any sense, and Larry seemed to be running out of ideas in Season 8 anyway. I love the show, but I'm not holding my breath. He quit Seinfeld after 6 seasons, and probably should have stopped Curb then too.

Does anybody watch Power? It's in its fourth season on Starz.

I think it's a really good show, been watching since the beginning. 50 Cent produces and appears in the show.

I'm hooked. Jessica Biel is magnificent. (Bill Pullman not so much. Well, I haven't really decided; I go back and forth)

Anybody else watching The Deuce? Written and created by David Simon and George Pelecanos. They both worked together on The Wire and Treme.
It's on HBO, 3rd episode aired last night. So far, I really like it.
I have to say James Franco looks pretty hot in this show. His acting is good too..

^ I've been watching. It's pretty good. The storyline is a little on the slow side (I guess I expected more from the 3rd episode), but both the set and acting are great.

I think the series so far has been really well done. I read the book over 20 years ago and really liked it. I think the show writers have done a good job of adapting the book.

Elizabeth Moss is excellent as always.

Really want to watch this but don't have hulu! I read the book about ten years ago myself and loved it. I met Margaret Atwood at a book talk and signing a few years ago and found her captivating. Great writer. I need to watch this series!
I just finished season 1. It was pretty good. :thumb:

I need a new series to start. I just downloaded "better things". The review have been really good. Anyone watch it?
