USA and gambling. What's the deal?
USA and gambling. What's the deal?
OK, I work for a UK company owned by an American company (AMI Entertainment), and I design slot machines. I know Vegas and Atlantic City have been the two main gambling meccas in the states. Illinois has just passed a law to allow a whole bunch of new casinos to allow 'gaming'.

Considering the US is up shit creek financially and illionois 'estimate' $1 billion in revenue, isn't it time more states relaxed the gambling laws?
And yes, I'm well aware of financial destruction it can cause to homes.

idk, i think there are quite a few cities that allow gambling, slot machines are just viewed as a lot "seedier" i think, so it's much rarer to have legal slot machines.Bandit72 wrote:OK, I work for a UK company owned by an American company (AMI Entertainment), and I design slot machines. Re: USA and gambling. What's the deal?
i'm pretty sure with all of the indian gaming anyone can get to a casino within a two hour drive.
the gaming industry has definitely taken a big hit the last few years though. i can see more states getting involved in gaming for the revenue since they do not get anything from the indian casinos.

Re: USA and gambling. What's the deal?
I'm only 39!! I've been working in the industry since '96. I guess the UK has a different slant on how it is seen, as fruit machines have been in our pubs for years. I guess it could be seen as seedy. It's all touch screen now and Internet so maybe technology will change the way people think.
Re: USA and gambling. What's the deal?
I see what you're saying but the Indian reservations aren't that big are they? I know a few states are keen to follow. Illinois just has the toughest regulations.creep wrote:i'm pretty sure with all of the indian gaming anyone can get to a casino within a two hour drive.

i can't speak for all states but in california, oregon and washington they are everywhere. this casino is 20 minutes from me and it's as big as any casino in lake tahoe.Bandit72 wrote:I see what you're saying but the Indian reservations aren't that big are they? Ohio recently approved gaming.
But they of course had to follow their desire to make sure everything fails and they passed a law that alcohol can't be served where gaming is going on.

We have state and multi-state lotteries many of which are supposed to generate money for public education.Bandit72 wrote:OK, I work for a UK company owned by an American company (AMI Entertainment), and I design slot machines. Of course, our public education system is nearly bankrupt on a fiscal and quality of service level so go figure.
Re: USA and gambling. What's the deal?
Indian reservation gaming is HUGE. they are able to open casinos on their reservations as long as the state they are in has some sort of legalized gambling (such as lottery & Bingo).
Did you know that if you are recognized as a Seminole you get a cut of the Hard Rock money. Every single Seminole gets a monthly check of the profits. My friend in Miami is friends with a Seminole, she & her kids get checks....hefty ones too
Between that & selling untaxed cigarettes on the reservations I believe they have gotten back at the white man

I don't understand that either, we have the NYS lottery plus we're in Powerball & Mega Millions. I pay a tremendous amount in school taxes and nearly every school district is laying off teachers due to budget issues.Pandemonium wrote:We have state and multi-state lotteries many of which are supposed to generate money for public education.Bandit72 wrote:OK, I work for a UK company owned by an American company (AMI Entertainment), and I design slot machines. All for gambling if people want to piss their money away let them.
Re: USA and gambling. What's the deal?
Yeah pretty much. Amazing states are still broke with this revenue coming in. I remember in Montana there was a casino in ever gas station basically. I blew me away. I could also buy a bowie knife and ammo for a few bucks. depending on where I was.

Beaurocracy at work.
I really wish we'd privatize the school systems and give people their school tax dollars back. My neice and nephew go to a co-op school where parents take turns teaching the kids. They're well advanced of most kids their age. Why does my brother still have to pay school taxes? He could be using that money to make their home school education that much better. The whole system is such a sham. Compulsory education at the hands of teachers you don't know, teaching an agenda you may not agree with, and you have to pay for it.
Re: USA and gambling. What's the deal?
we don't have co-ops or charter schools but parents who opt to send their kids to Catholic school or private schools STILL are required to pay school taxes. As am I who doesn't have any children in the system (nor plan on it). This is not fair.
Someone said "Well someone paid for your education" YEA MY PARENTS DID.
Plus in NY they are SO hung up on the ELA test scores and where theur district will place that all they do is teach for the test.

Re: USA and gambling. What's the deal?
the california lottery gives about a billion dollars a year to the schools but that is a small portion of the annual budget.
