Purely because I want Messi to add this to his CV of being the greatest footballer ever.

Wow what a match between Span vs Portugal!

Bad news for Ronaldo though..

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/cristia ... _Post_News
Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has reached a deal with the Spanish tax authorities to serve two years in prison and pay an 18.8-million euro ($21.8-million US) fine in a tax evasion case, newspaper El Mundo reported on Friday.

Ronaldo is unlikely to serve any time in jail under the deal because Spanish law states that a sentence of under two years for a first offence can be served on probation.

The 33-year-old Portuguese footballer, who is accused of evading taxes worth 14.7 million euros (17.1 million US) and, through his agents, has denied the allegations.

Ronaldo is due to play for Portugal on Friday in a World Cup match against Spain in Russia.

Gestifute, the agency representing the player, was not immediately available to comment on the report on Friday. The Spanish tax agency also declined to comment.

Spanish courts have recently cracked down on tax evasion among leading footballers.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi was handed a 21-month prison sentence in 2017 on similar charges, but under Spanish law, was able to exchange the penalty for a fine.

Between 2005 and 2010, foreign players in Spain were protected under the so-called "Beckham law" allowing them to curb their taxes. But as the financial crisis bit deeper, that exemption was lifted, paving the way for the cases.

Mexico lost today against Sweden, but Korea won against Germany. So Mexican soccer fans went to the Korean embassy to celebrate their pass to the next round.
"¡Coreano, hermano, ya eres mexicano!" (Korean brother, you are Mexican now!")

Yeh, a bit of a non event last night. There isn't a stand out team in this years World Cup I don't think, although I would probably say Belgium's first 11 have been impressive. It's the most open competition I can remember.

Oh well, as one of my brother's friends said, Mexico had already lost their chances last week against Sweden. But I don't care, I'm still happy about yesterday.
This ad made my day, though.

What a game. I had Belgium to win in 90 minutes, over 2.5 goals and Hazard to score! Gutted!

Yeah, looking forward to the England game. I was living in the UK(London) in 1990 when England reached the semi-finals and lost to Germany. It was my first time to experience World Cup fever and crazy fans. I thought Canadians were nuts with hockey, but football/soccer fans are next level fanatical.. I remember people singing in the streets, on the tube and buses. Televisions all over the place- inside, outside, in the kitchen of the hotel where I worked. Many of my co-workers were Germans, so of course they were loving their win over England. Needless to say, my English co-workers were a little quiet afterwards.

Go England!

It's been mental here. The only thing I find very annoying and a bit odd is this new 'trend' of throwing your pint of beer in the air after a goal. Maybe I'm getting too old and miserable

I noticed that in all of the "celebration" videos and I thought the same thing. How annoying.

Les Bleus! I'm hoping for them and Croatia as the final. Also CR7 leaving Real is nice on the club side of things.

Not World Cup, but football(soccer)related.

Manchester City banned from European club competitions for two seasons by Uefa

Manchester City have been banned from European club competition in 2020/21 and 2021/22 after being found to have committed "serious breaches" of Uefa's club licensing and financial fair play regulations.

The reigning Premier League champions have also been fined 30m euros (£25m).( :yikes: )

The decision is subject to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Manchester City say they are "disappointed but not surprised" by the "prejudicial" decision and will appeal.

They added in a statement: "The club has always anticipated the ultimate need to seek out an independent body and process to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence in support of its position.

"In December 2018, the Uefa chief investigator publicly previewed the outcome and sanction he intended to be delivered to Manchester City, before any investigation had even begun.

"The subsequent flawed and consistently leaked Uefa process he oversaw has meant that there was little doubt in the result that he would deliver. The club has formally complained to the Uefa disciplinary body, a complaint which was validated by a CAS ruling.

"Simply put, this is a case initiated by Uefa, prosecuted by Uefa and judged by Uefa. With this prejudicial process now over, the club will pursue an impartial judgment as quickly as possible and will therefore, in the first instance, commence proceedings with the Court of Arbitration for Sport at the earliest opportunity."
