We just need more controls imposed on us by "the man". For example if all cars had a "thing" in them which rendered certain functions like texting, social media, etc inoperable whilst the driver was driving then hey presto! No more problems. But of course, what if you're the passenger? Well the dining in the car detects where the phone is and allows those not in the drivers seat to have a fully functional phone. What if you have an accident or have pulled over? The functionality of the "thing" allows for these scenarios.

Just kidding, we need to be better people in general or more people need to be taught a lesson. Like if you see someone texting when driving, you're allowed to punch them in the throat. JK. Or am I?

Do you guys say "Insta" or "Instagram" ?

What does "drip" mean? I'm assuming it's a compliment like fresh or stylish. :oldtimer:

Instagram.

If someone's a drip, they're a bit of a walkover or weak.

How hard is it to remove old carpeting? Is it a job that I could do or should I hire somebody?

There's some carpeting in my mother's house that's about 40 years old and needs to be removed. The carpet is on the stairs, front hall way and upstairs hall, not through out the rooms. No plans to get new carpet, only a runner or something like that for the middle of the stairs. The floor underneath is finished, but will likely need some refreshing.

in the hallways it's easy. it is just held down by tack strips but then you have to remove the tack strips. they are nailed down so you will need a small pry bar and a hammer. if hardwood is underneath it will have holes it it and it will probably be stained.

you will probably have tack strips on the stairs too but the carpet is usually stapled down too so you will need some pliers to grab a hold of the carpet to rip it out and then you will have a bunch of staples to remove. wear gloves too because the tack strips will poke you.

not a super fun job but it could be done. probably pretty cheap to hire it out though. :noclue:

Thanks, creep! I'm going to try a small section and if it's too much of a pain, I will hire somebody. I think the carpet part will be easy but the tack strips and all the nails may be a little challenging.

Just remove the carpeting and leave the tack strips. Once you’ve stepped on it barefooted four or five times you’ll remember to step over them; it’ll practically become muscle memory.

Source: I’ve removed the carpeting in several of my rooms and have not yet removed the tack strips. Even my dog and girlfriend have learned to step over them!

Heh, when we originally bought our house, it had the original carpet from probably 1960 or whenever the place was built. The carpet and padding was worn, flattened and about as thin as a beach towel and in a few doorways, barefoot you could feel the tacks poking up through the carpet. And yeah, our dog wouldn't cross the threshold going into one of the bedrooms for that reason until we got new carpet even though I initially laid down thick fuzzy bath mats on those doorways to protect everyone's feet.

Finally, I decided to give removing the carpet a try. The tack strips came off fairly easily and the condition of the floor is in way better shape than I thought, just a few holes here and there that aren't really noticeable. I did hire someone to do 1/4 inch rounds and to remove the carpet from the stairs. I don't think the stairs will be as easy.

What are those holes in the floor for?
Looks like you have terrazo or tile 8" below the wood floor. :hs:

kv is correct, it is heat related - air return. Normally grilles go on top(I had to take off to remove carpet). The house is heated by forced air(natural gas) and those air return are required for air flow, no heat comes out. I'm winging the answer, but it is mostly correct.

Yes, it does, look odd. There's cool air that comes out. The floor is a floating floor. Don't ask me what that means. The handy man I hired said thAt's what it is.

In the last week or so, I've become aware of a change in the way people speak...younger people, mainly. By younger, I mean under 40.

I don't know if it's something new or my ears have just tuned into it and I notice it all the time now.

This language evolution/shift/trend(not sure what to call it) is people adding a sound to the last letter of a word where normally there wouldn't. I've noticed it in younger people, under 40, I would say.

For example: Now is Now-UH, Great = Great-UH, Thing= Thing-UH, Ew! = Ew-UH!

Is it just me or is really a thing-uh now?

If I wanted to annoy one of my annoying neighbours with loud music, should I go with Pantera or Slayer?

Open to suggestions...

Do you think these strawberries in cognac purchased in 1990 are still edible?

This has inspired me to poke around online and see what I can find out. I have found a few instances saying that the strawberries will last indefinitely, but I am also seeing a number of instances where specific timelines are given in weeks, months, or years. Ultimately, I wouldn’t risk it.

I’m also now seeing the 18% ABV. That seems very low. And the lower alcohol content would mean less preservation. I definitely wouldn’t trust it.
