Um, can I ask you guys a question?

#1 Post by Artemis » Wed Jul 23, 2014 7:57 pm

My low-techness is about to come out...

Is an app only for a cell phone or smart phone?

Can it be used on a laptop?

There are now "Apps" for Windows 8, so yeah, there's a sort of way to use them on a computer. But usually there's a "Desktop App" or "Desktop version" to complement a mobile app.

App is short for Application

Which is the same thing as a Program

Mac called them Applications

Windows called them Programs

But then after the term "App" got all popular on phones, now Programs are called Apps too.

Does that make sense? haha

I thought 'cell' was the north american term for what we call 'mobile'? I don't really hear the term smart phone, or even 'mobile' phone anymore. People tend to be brand specific.

Some 'Apps' are also only available for tablets.

I think Bandit's answer is what you're looking for. When people say "I got this app" or "you should try this app," 95% of the time they will be talking about an app for their mobile phone or tablet. Not fucking Wndows 8

If you have, say, a Tetris app in your iPhone, you cannot also use it in your PC or laptop. Some apps can, however, have alternate versions for PC and/or Mac, but you may have to buy them separately.

just to muddy the waters a bit more (maybe I'm in the wrong thread, hah!) there are apps for the Chrome browser as well.

Thanks for all the information.

I wanted to listen to a live radio stream of the Jack White concert in Chicago last night but couldn't access from my location. Someone on the fan page suggested to go the APP Store to get radio. Com. I didn't try because I don't know how they work. I assume there's a fee too.

Ok, I inherited a Lenovo. It's performance is a joke. I'm shopping a new computer today and I'm thinking of switching to a MacBook air 11.6 display, Intel core I5 with a 4 gb memory and 128 gb flash.

Any thoughts or other recs?

I've got 400 on a best buy card and will contribute another 4 give or take a Benjamin

128 gb flash sounds awfully low for today's standards

11.6 is pretty small. my main laptop is 13.3 and i find that to be the perfect size for portability and not being too small.

Ok. I'm not someone who does much more than archive music, use spreadsheets and word documents, and use the Internet of course. Still low? Or is it more about speed?

My primary laptop is 13.3" (but QHD+, so close to 4K), 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM... Don't underestimate screen size for usefulness, especially since most screens are now at least 1080p (and many have already gone with the near-4k...).

There's no reason not to have 8GB of RAM (or any reason to have more than this). RAM is cheap, and a computer that lacks 8GB is probably a rip-off.

The Macbooks are well-built, but that sounds like BestBuy is trying to get rid of their old stock of outdated computers.

Also helpful to note: i5/i7 don't mean anything. An i5 desktop processor can be exceptionally powerful (I have an i5 4670k that's still holding up nicely years after release), but i5 in the mobile context just means "mid-range", not equivalent to i5 in the desktop context. That said, Apple doesn't put terrible processors in their machines. It's just important to know that you can't compare i5s across platforms.

Ok, so far pretty unanimous. I do have to install final draft as well. I think that takes a lot of memory as well

I not opposed to an outdated computer as long as it satisfies my meager needs. :noclue: but this one sounds insufficient. I'm also not married to Apple, which are much more expensive.

128g of storage is probably fine. unless you are planning on storing a lot of video files i doubt you could come close to filling it up. it can gold something like 30k songs.

i doubt that you can upgrade the ram on a macbook air but i agree that 8gb helps a lot.

of course for $800 you can get everything you need in a pc easily.

Yes, there is only ONE perfect amount of RAM and it just so happens to be the amount Hypey has on his laptop. If you get anything beyond 8 GB you're a stupid moron and if you get any less you're a fucking imbecile. Fucking hell Hype, you're so fucking obnoxious.

But anyway, 4 GB of RAM is perfectly fine, especially if you'll be using it for music and Excel and Internet. I have a PC with 2 monitors, running Win7 64 bits and some heavy software, and it runs just fine. If possible, don't get a hard drive with less than 500 GB, especially if you're planning on keeping a nice collection of music there. One of my hard drives is 500 GB and after 2 years of use I still have about 200 GB left. I keep my music on a different hard drive, also 500 GB, and that has about 250 GBs left. If you get a hard drive of 128 or 256, you may very well find yourself having to delete stuff because you're running low on space.

Regarding screen size, probably 13" would be a good minimum. 11" might be just too small, and usually the 11" laptops have lower specs than the 13".

yup. I think I hover around 3k songs and rarely store videos except family ones from my family. Maybe 30 max at any given time. I'll stick to 8gb as a goal though.

i've been looking at the lenovo yoga's lately and am probably going to get one for my next laptop. many people will think it's silly but i like the idea of having a laptop/tablet. the only problem is that i hate windows 8. that has been my only reason not to have one already.
