The Dead Musicians thread
Re: The Dead Musicians thread
Fuck....rip charlie watts
Re: The Dead Musicians thread
Fuck is right. Everything I read said his absence from the tour was for a routine/benign procedure. I guess they don't exist at 80
Re: The Dead Musicians thread
Surprised how bummed I am for an 80 year old from a band I wasn't (currently) obsessed with...just loved that dude...sucks...
The stones died today for me...I know for others they died a long time ago with bill going...or ronnie going or before...but there was still enough foundation left...for me...
Side story that's kinda ironic...I was hugely impacted by the basics when I was starting playing/writing and recording music as a kid because the Stones and Beatles had shit on mono or 4 track and all we had were shitty 4 track recorders to start...you could pan in mono to hear just Paul with John...or Ringo with George....iso out those drum takes so I could begin to figure out what they were playing...sooo much Ringo and Charlie....anyway I've been playing since those days I have pretty much everything I ever wanted except (comically) the hi hats I've always wanted...I've been on shitty pawn shop hats for my entire life lol...two days ago I bought em...they are shipping from Canada...I feel like I'm finally graduating..and one of my teachers just died...hi hats...of course....on mamba day to boot..oh wells

Re: The Dead Musicians thread
Insane the amount of texts from people who play that are shook this morning...huge impact..
Re: The Dead Musicians thread
So distinctive. That missing hat strike on the backbeat always fascinated me. What hats did you get?
Re: The Dead Musicians thread
Just some old A customs...they are the same era as my ride and crashes...it was just this thing where I wasn't playing at home much on my real kit....mostly just Roland's...and I'd just borrow hats to record...been playing with these guys for a few years on someone else's kit...been hating his cymbals so first my ride appeared..then my splash...now it's all my shit there except for the hats...I had gone back and forth for decades about what I really wanted...never pulled the trigger on spending 5-600 for new hats...finally just said fuck it and found the vintage....I have my dream kit...it's silly as fuck I never bought these

RIP Charlie Watts.
The Rolling Stones is my all time favourite band, so this news upset me today. I agree with kv that this is the end of the Stones. I'm happy that I was able to see Charlie Watts outside of the Stones, playing with his jazz quintet. He had a great career, doing what he loved to the end- playing music. Always cool and understated, loved his style.

RIP dub legend Lee Perry
Re: The Dead Musicians thread
Yep, was just about to post about Lee 'Scratch'Perry. Over the years, I've seen many, many concerts, but sadly. never got to see him.
This weekend there was another drummer who died-Ron Bushy(Iron Butterfly). He was 79. I can't say I was ever into Iron Butterfly, I only know that one song, In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida.

Rip drakeo the ruler...crazy shit stabbed in the neck at his own show...brutal, but he was always about it...the continuing sad story of the hood eating their own...crabs in the bucket society built for em...big grats on making it to the ripe old, seldom achieved, age of 28! (Made it by a couple of weeks phew!)
Re: The Dead Musicians thread
this is from joe walsh " We have lost a national treasure today. Ronnie was undisputedly the Queen of the Golden era of Rock and Roll. I had loved
her from the moment I heard the Ronettes. She was everything I had hoped she would be and much more. Thank you for the music, I still love you.

Re: The Dead Musicians thread
from what I heard Ronnie had an album ready to go with Ronettes and Phil Spector but they had a bad break up so Spector never released it but that opened things up for the Supremes and the rest is history

Another shit day in the music world...
Andy Fletcher, 60 from Depeche Mode. This one stings a bit. One of the first concerts I saw as a young teen was Depeche Mode in 1982. Stuck with them ever since- 40 fucking years!!
Also today, Alan White, drummer for YES. Also played with John Lennon and George Harrison.

Re: The Dead Musicians thread
Anybody read the David Berman feature in CREEM that was just posted? All about his last days leading up to his death. An incredible, ungodly shame.
