The situation with J. Geils was kind of fucked the last few years. Apparently he was getting tired of even doing short rounds of shows even though the rest of the band still wanted to tour. So the rest of the band went out wihout him using a pair of replacement guitarists and he got pissed and sued them, seeing as the band is under his name. I dunno if it was ever resolved but it doesn't matter now.

I saw The J. Geils Band three times, once during the Love Stinks tour in '80, once opening for the Rolling Stones in '81 before the Freeze Frame album was released and last during the Freeze Frame tour in '82 with a young U2 opening for them. That Freeze Frame show, which was at the LA Sports Arena was really epic. They did three long encores, then it seemed the show was over, house lights came on and a satisfied crowd started filing out and about 5 minutes later they came back out and played two more songs with the house lights still on.

I really wish they would have played the West Coast on one of their short reunion tours about 15-18 years ago. I really wanted to see them one more time.

I remember back in the early 80's when Eddie Van Halen was really plugging Holdsworth in interviews. I picked up several of his albums over a 3 year period and kept trying to get into them but it was too much weird jazzy free form playing with too much keyboard for my RAWK! head to wrap around. About 10 years ago when I was culling a lot of my records out of my collection, I decided to give "I.O.U." one last spin before I threw it out and wound up finally "getting it." Although I've kept his albums and only listened to 'em a few times since and it's still not quite my thing, I'm glad I kept them.

Two drummers in two days...
British drummer Jimmy Copley, who performed with Tony Iommi, Paul Rodgers, Jeff Beck and many others, has died after a battle with leukemia, according to a Facebook post by his former M3 bandmate Tony Martin.

Martin wrote, “Sad to acknowledge the death of Jimmy Copley, drummer and all round great dude. Jimmy was in the band M3 with me but he played for many named artists …. Including Tony Iommi, and Paul Rodgers ….. He had such an accurate touch with drums that seemed effortless, Sad to hear leukemia took his life. Thoughts are with his family and others that knew him.”

According to University Hospital Bristol, Copley had been diagnosed with leukemia in 2015, and relapsed following a bone marrow transplant. He opted to discontinue chemotherapy.

Copley, who was born in London in 1953, was a session musician who had long played with Jeff Beck. In addition, he had stints with Graham Parker, Tears for Fears, the Pretenders and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, among many others.

In 2008, Copley released his first solo album Slap My Hand. The album featured performances by a huge array of artists, including Beck. He was known as the master of the open-handed drumming technique, which involves not crossing hands when playing the high hat and snare drum simultaneously.

This morning, Copley’s Facebook page quickly filled with remembrances from friends and other musicians, with many calling him one of the best drummers and people with whom they’ve ever worked.

Copley’s kindness showed even in his final days, when, according to the University Hospital Bristol, his hospital room was transformed into a temporary recording studio so that he and friends could record an EP to benefit the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre and Royal United Hospital in Bristol.

In addition to Copley, the EP Psyche Funk features Anthony Head, Robert Hart of Bad Company, Chris White of Dire Straits, and Charlie Jones (who played with Robert Plant and Page and Plant.)

“I’m making the EP to give something back to the wonderful people at the NHS wards that have treated me,” Copley said. It gave me something to aim at during the dark days. I feel good about leaving some new music behind.”

Keith Mitchell, an original member of Mazzy Star, died on Sunday from undisclosed causes, Rolling Stone reports.

“Our hearts are broken,” Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval and David Roback said in a statement on Facebook. “We have lost the much beloved Keith Mitchell, a very talented and amazing drummer that we have had the privilege to work with for many years, he will live in all of our hearts forever… We’ll miss you Big Fella.”

Along with Roback, Mitchell was a founding member of Opal, which renamed itself Mazzy Star in 1989 after Sandoval joined the group. Mitchell played on all four of Star’s studio albums, including 1993’s Tonight That I Might See, which featured the band’s breakout single “Fade Into You.”

Thats terrible about Chris, hard to believe even though its real RIP. I remember first hearing about Soundgarden around 88' and then picking up Louder Than Love on cassette when it came out.

Really strange to hear....never really a SG fan, and never really followed him closely but it seemed he left all the cliché lifestyle traps long ago and was living a fairly normal down to earth family white picket fence existence. Very sad....way too soon.

Afghan Whigs Guitarist Dave Rosser Dead at 50

Image
Dave Rosser, a guitarist for the long-running alt-rock group, the Afghan Whigs, has passed away at the age of 50. He died following a brief battle with colon cancer.

Rosser joined the band for their reunion in 2011, playing on their albums Do to the Beast and the recent In Spades. He had also played guitar alongside Greg Dulli in the Gutter Twins.

Further, Rosser lent his skills to music from Twilight Singers, Mark Lanegan, Marc Broussard and Tim Heidecker.

The Afghan Twigs confirmed his passing with a Facebook post, which reads as follows:

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our friend, brother and inspiration.

Dave Rosser passed away peacefully last evening surrounded by love. Thank you to all who kept him in their hearts. He is forever in ours.

The band is set to embark on a tour in support of In Spades later this year, though it's as-yet unclear if Rosser's passing will affect their plans.

I always liked the lyric:

Spread your wings open for the flight, let me fill you up with something milky and white
