This score is the result of some lucky guessing. I thought the antonyms were harder than the synonyms.

Your English Vocabulary Size is:

28575

★★★ Top 0.43%
You are Shakespeare! You can even create new words that will expand the English dictionary.

Bragging is not an attractive trait, but let's be honest. A man who catches a big fish doesn't go home through an alley.

I then tried to purposely miss every single answer just to see what the result would say:

50
Last 0.50%
Your vocabulary size is like that of a 1-year-old kid in the US! (are you kidding?)

....somehow, I must have nailed at least one question correctly, lol.

Yeah, and it sucked. So, as I was usually bored (when I was actually in class), I would read the dictionary.

I don't think they had them when you were there, but when they started the CA Lottery, every school got a dictionary for every student in every class. They stayed in the shelf under the desks. Teachers would come to complain it was the only thing the lottery ever did for schools.

I really don't have much in the way of exceptional skills or attributes, but I will say I've got a pretty damn good vocabulary... for whatever that's worth?

21450, white collar. Wonder what it would be if I had all those brain cells back. Oh well, probably be lower after this weekend.

This test is making the rounds on Facebook, and I find the method somewhat suspect. Many words, especially archaisms and other rarely used ones, are known by chance, and many of these are knowable by context, or are easily forgotten and then remembered. So I wouldn't put much stock in the raw number you get, it's probably a more accurate measure of how you compare to other people at taking that specific test with those specific words. Anyway, I took it a few days ago while drunk and scored the same as Sue.

To maybe reinforce my scepticism, the Economist has shared another site a bunch of times, which, helpfully, provides its methodology. Here's a link to that site: http://testyourvocab.com/

On that one, I score around 40,000, but I think this still seems inaccurate. Many of us have highly technical, and very narrow, but still quite large, vocabularies, on top of ordinary speech, which wouldn't easily be measured by a test like this.

Hype wrote:Although the test and its results are mainly just a bit of fun, I was super-stoked to get a high score. I'm ashamed of having been excited, so I'll say that the test is shit, and that I took another test and also got a high score. I'm ashamed of being excited by that too, so I'll just say that both tests are meaningless. So although the tests are meaningless, I still scored higher than all of you dumb fucks. WHILST DRUNK! Haha, take that, 15 active users of an old Jane's Addiction Internet forum!

These things are for fun, but they are absurd. Contractions alone, depending upon whether they are counted or not, dramatically alter a true account of vocab size. Other factors will as well.

Shakes likely had 28k in available to him....and of course the words he invented could add or subtract from that depending upon era, context, and reader. His was probably equivalent to a person with a dozen PhD's that run the spectrum from the humanities, sciences, and languages.

Even attempting to quantify his has proved to be a daunting task. Collaborate works and apocryphal issues come into play to muddy the waters. Many experts insist the best way to identify Shakes is by the words he doesn't use, not the one he knows.

I scored higher than creep, but I'm sure 99% of the English-speaking population would understand him better than they'd understand me, even in written form.
