It’s quite odd, because I was born in 1984 but I have the memory of watching like a special TV program where people were shocked that Lennon had died; it must’ve been a special after 10 years of his death or something.
I vividly remember feeling sad and thinking Imagine was beautiful, as it was playing in the background while a painter painted a very simple picture of John. I wonder if I could find that on YouTube.
I remember hearing about this at work. At the time, I worked at an Aerospace subcontractor on the night shift. One of the guys in our dept had a portable tv in his rollaway toolbox and may have had the football game going. At some point, word got around that Lennon had been murdered and a bunch of us where crowded around his tv watching breaking news updates. There was one guy who was a huge Beatles fan who was so upset he had to go home for the rest of the shift.
I think the closest emotional reaction I can recall being among a group of people was when Cobain died, I was at a graphic arts trade school at the time and all these young kids were literally crying in class when the news broke.
My UPS guy told me about cobain...he knew we had a band and was all "I bet you guys are bummed about cobain huh?" And I'm all what about him?...so I have the memory of that and turning mtv on and the tv warming up to kurt loader talking about his death....much like my 9/11 where I was flying to Chicago that day...only to get the call from my buddy I was visiting saying you aren't going anywhere...and me not believing, turning on the TV and as the picture warmed up seeing one tower and asking where the other was....
