MetallicA

#1 Post by Tyler Durden » Thu Aug 18, 2016 4:06 pm

New Metallica song "Hardwired", from their forthcoming album "Hardwired...to Self-Destruct", out November 18th. Produced by Greg Fidelman...he produced the last couple of Slayer albums.

I'm not a Metallica fan by any means...but being a music fan, I find the trajectory of their career interesting. I think this is a good song. If I was a Metallica fan (and disillusioned with what they have become over the years), I'd be very happy with this.

i really don't like it. the drumming is super annoying and it's so high in the mix. i'm not really a metallica fan either though.

I'm definitely curious to hear opinions...

I've been hearing the riffs for almost 3 years, so I have almost zero ability to hear the songs objectively - good or bad.

Creep, that's pretty standard for their sound, so like you said, probably not your thing.

you really have to be a hardcore metal fan to get into something like that. It just sounds like stock uninventive riffing to me, there's nothing about the song that stuck in my head afterwards

Nah, hardcore metal fans reflexively hate anything Metallica does...

How'd you hear it? Inside access or has it been teased live?

This sounds like it could've been on In Justice For All which is all anyone wants with post Black Album Metallica.

I will bet anything Lars did not play the double bass parts at the end.

I like the song. Of course it doesn't touch their glory days but it's decent and to the point. I also like the fact that it doesn't seem sonically brickwalled to hell although the low end and the bass is pretty weak, possibly because it's a YouTube clip. One thing that kind of bums me is that this album will probably push back the massive Master Of Puppets box set to mid-2017. One thing I hear people mocking on other sites is the album name and cover art:

They should just call the album "Hardwired."

Sounds ok. Not bad. The album name and art suck. Should be called "Hardwired". Agreed. I think the drum tone of this band has sucked for well over a decade.

I find the lack of depth of the sound a bit annoying, but like Pande says it might be because it's a YouTube clip.

The other thing I think could be better is James' voice (and the lyrics). It's a bit meh as it stands, like just some dude singing a song. He set high standards for himself, as his more youthful voice was incredible for this style of music, but in this song I can't hear the dynamics and subtle details you can find in earlier recordings.

Quite decent, though. A lot better than everything since... I can't even remember, probably since S&M.

They are still compressing the fuck out of their music. It just sounds so artificial.

They must be damn near deaf at this point to not notice it.

It sounds very early Metallica with better production. Like Battery for example. Yet this has been done so why go back?

I like 80's Metallica but they should call it a day, I think they've exhausted their sound.

Same goes for RHCP

I agree. RHCP should have stopped after By The Way, if not before. But you're always going to please new (and old fans) so....

It reminds me of a mix between "Motorbreath" and "Blackened" and as such without any bass presence

Disclaimer: not my genre

When I read this thread & saw creep's top post I thought "drums are always way up front with tallica"..but on listen it sounded even more so...bass is buried...as stated youtube does it no favors...but damn Lars...it's a band...let's hear em too

It's obviously better on Spotify, but yes, like on ...And Justice for All, the bass goes missing. It's less tinny that AJFA but it's still very unoriginal.

Before I watched that I should have bet my house that Lars would have jumped off his seat right at the end of the song. Like he does after every fucking song. SIT down mate, you're the drummer.

For the record, I think it sounds like a throwaway song from one of their old albums. Not bad, but they’ve done it better. Not hit single material

I remember seeing them at Wembley Stadium about 9 years ago and after every song he jumped off his stool and either walked to the front of the stage, climbed on his kit or walked off stage, for whatever reason. I still think he has small man syndrome and is very much an attention seeker.
