I thought I was over with the superheroes movies (I passed on the last Captain American movie), but Doctor Strange was way, way, way better than I expected. I knew British actors would have kicked ass, but seriously, even my dad liked it. I know no one on here thinks Benedict Cumberbatch is sexy, but besides that, I love his acting

i watched hell or high water. pretty good movie. jeff bridges was great in it.
Texas brothers--Toby (Chris Pine), and Tanner (Ben Foster), come together after years divided to rob branches of the bank threatening to foreclose on their family land. For them, the hold-ups are just part of a last-ditch scheme to take back a future that seemed to have been stolen from under them. Justice seems to be theirs, until they find themselves on the radar of Texas Ranger, Marcus (Jeff Bridges) looking for one last grand pursuit on the eve of his retirement, and his half-Comanche partner, Alberto (Gil Birmingham). As the brothers plot a final bank heist to complete their scheme, and with the Rangers on their heels, a showdown looms at the crossroads where the values of the Old and New West murderously collide.

Can't be as jaw-droppingly stupid as Suicide Squad. I watched the extended cut last night and I'd swear the movie was written by a committee of 5 year olds.

Off to see Rogue 1 tonight. It's very rare that I go and see a film first day of release but my friend bought me a ticket. Interestingly Felicity Jones went to the girls school half a mile from where I live.

Rogue 1. After a slow start proved highly enjoyable. First time I've been to an IMAX viewing too. After seeing Peter Cushing and a 1977 Princess Leia, it just lead me to believe that they could do whole spin offs with every character from that era. The cgi for both of them was fantastic, Cushing especially. I did notice James Earl Jones' voice is noticeably deteriorating, but then again he is 85.

Agreed on all fronts sans IMAX, I saw it normals styles - but in Gold Class - big recliners, only 42 seats in each GC cinema.
I think R1 is a Star Wars movie for Star Wars nerds.

I finally watched it today. I think I liked it better than TFA. I teared up in the end. Can't wait for the Han Solo movie even though I'm not thrilled about the actor they cast as Landon Calrissian. I still don't see it. I love Donald Glover but he really needs to get bigger...

Yeah I'm quietly optimistic about it, and while I think the success of R1 will help cement the acceptance of anthology films, the Han Solo standalone won't have the bonus that it fills, or clears up, a story gap, rather it just creates background, it will have the added difficulty of trying to surpass past actors' "belovedness".

Yup...let's wait and see. Does anybody know why can't we edit our posts anymore? I meant Lando, not Landon. When I was little he was one of my favorite characters (although Obi Wan was a favorite as well as smartasses like Solo and Calrissian, my ultimate favorite has always been Darth Vader  )
Edit: I was able to edit this post, so forget about what I said. I couldn't yesterday. Maybe I was too tired and waited too long (perhaps I fell asleep) to edit.

I saw Manchester by the Sea and didn't like it. Casey Affleck was very good and no doubt he will get an Oscar nomination.
My problem with the movie is that the main character never changes. I don't want to say too much in case in anyone is planning to see it. From the beginning of the movie you see that Casey Affleck is in emotional pain to the point that he's like a zombie. I get that in real life some people never get over bad things that have happened to them, but in a film, a character that doesn't evolve in any way doesn't work for me because it sucks the life out of the story. Also, some of the dialogue didn't seem realistic for working class people who live around the bay in Massachussetts. To clarify, the writing was very good with some funny lines. The actor who played the son didn't seem phased at all by the death of his father which seemed odd to me because the film showed the father and son had a good relationship. I didn't expect the kid to have a breakdown and try to kill himself or anything, but he seemed like he didn't really care. Um, what else? Oh, the classical music was overpowering at times. I don't know if that was intentional but it didn't really fit. There was some nice camera work, so points for that. I also liked the ending of this movie. In general, I love depressing movies about dysfunctional people, so it's odd that I disliked this one, :noclue:
