Maybe, but the production was so stripped (similar to NS) down with such original sound for the day they were all heavily listened to by myself and my friends. Still love those albums.

War is the album that is so stripped down and dry sounding, I'd actually say the album sounds "brittle." I know it's intentional but the production gives that album a really harsh edge. Although their first two albums "Boy" and "October" are also rather sparse and thin, those two albums still have dynamics and atmosphere in the sound and production. War sounds like the band is playing in a cramped concrete bunker with little Vox amps and a 3 piece drum kit.

When Brian Eno started producing them on The Unforgettable Fire and (do-producing)The Joshua Tree, that's when they started doing massive layering of the instruments, more studio reverb, getting a better drum sound from Larry Mullin Jr and most importantly, properly mixing Adam Clayton's bass in the songs.

Don't totally disagree, but for me the first 3 were magic, thereafter magic tricks.

I agree those first three albums are excellent. And to be clear, I'm not knocking the production on War, it has a very unique sound that suits that batch of songs. I have a soft spot for October, one song in particular "Stranger In A Strange Land" ranks way up in my top 10 favorite U2 songs. It's a shame they've never played that one live.

Perhaps it's appropriate that the first time I heard U@ was their War LP when my friend and I were picked up from the mall by friend's older sister. It was playing on a boombox in the old Mazda passed from sibling to sibling.

U2 announced the dates for their Joshua Tree 30th anniversary tour today. As in previous tours, most of the floor/field is GA and is reasonably priced around $80 although they will also have some type of pit probably with seats that will feature premium pricing.

They plan on playing the album in it's entirety but it's not set in stone they will play the songs in the album's running order, especially considering the first 4 songs are among their most popular and played to death tunes.

Perhaps most telling, The Edge mentioned in a new Rolling Stone interview that the delayed new studio album was pushed back because of the band's now-typical second guessing in light of the US election, Brexit and other recent world events. It's going to be fun going to the LA show and hearing Bono whine about Trump after the huge pass they gave Bush Jr during the 2001 and 2005 tours.

I might go to this show. It's been 20 years since I last saw U2 - PopMart tour 1997.
Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers and OneRepublic will alternate opening for U2 on the North American leg. Tickets go on sale on Jan 17, but earlier for subscribers to the band's website.
I might be mixing them up, but aren't One Republic a boy band??

No, you're probably thinking of One Direction, lol. All three of these bands are mostly watered down Kings Of Leon/Coldplay lightweights probably chosen to bring in the Starbucks hipsters for the North American dates. I'm not a big fan of Oasis and I don't have a clue what Noel Gallagher's solo stuff is like but I'd prefer to see him open by about eleventy billion times over any of the acts opening for the NA dates.

Yes, I was thinking of One Direction.
I saw Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds in 2015. I thought they were quite good;they definitely have that pop rock sound. Noel's voice is distinctive and in top form. The band Noel's assembled is really tight too. One of the things I really liked about the show I went to was Noel's hilarious commentary between songs. He's a really funny and down to earth guy. You can tell he really loves what he's doing because he's not just running through the songs.

I have always liked U2. JT is a solid album, among the B-sides. Pop mart had some of the best U2 songs during that period. I was taking about shows with my cousin, and he actually saw U2 at the Roxy in 1980. That would of been cool. :thumb:

Time wise it just sounded wrong...plus the Roxy is tiny, nothing against you, I'm sure your buddy just forgot when/where...I know I have enough times
Even the band's first L.A. show in 1981 was at the old Country Club in suburban Reseda – a venue with about twice the capacity of the Roxy.

U2 never played The Roxy until 2015 on a day off inbetween a multi-night stand at the nearby LA Forum.

The only small venues they played in SoCal was the Reseda Country Club (which I saw), a tiny dump in Anaheim called The Woodstock and The Santa Monica Civic all in '81. They played The Hollywood Palladium on their second album tour in '82 and played arenas and stadiums ever since.

Hey panda...I always wished I had all my ticket stubs...But I clubbed so much last minute a ton of my shows were just wrist bands or stamps....Remember stamps? Where you could lick the back of your hand and get someone in free after they "came back after their cig" just thought of that shit..Lol "hey dude, five bucks if you lick your hand" :lolol:
Or banging on clubs back doors till you annoyed a patron enough to open it lol...Or some clubs used colored wrist bands they cycled...Once you had all the colors no more sold out shows

A combo of both, plus I have a pretty sharp memory. Because I was usually the driver when a bunch of friends would got to shows, I rarely got hammered. Although clubs were a different story, lol.

When my friends and I were regularly hitting Hollywood clubs on weekends between about '85 - '90, BAM magazine and the LA Times Sunday calender section were like my tour guide to what bands and clubs I'd wanna check out. BAM magazine was how I first got clued into Janes and caught one of their last Scream club shows. Starting in late '89, I occasionally DJ'd at local live rock club The Marquee in Garden Grove which was a couple miles away and could come and go without paying cover even if the place was at capacity. I can't guess how many forgettable mostly metal and punk bands I saw during this period.

The Santa Monica Civic was a fun place to see bands. With the exception of the Pretenders, everyone I saw there were metal bands like Motorhead, Megadeth, Motley Crue, etc. The thing about was it was a big concrete walled box so the sound had a really hard high end that would wreck the hearing for days afterwords.

Up until the early 90's, I always kept a tiny day planner/phonebook/diary on me at all times, something I picked up in High School to stay organized. Since the early 90's, I just compile and write stuff on what is essentially a huge 25 year old text/word document I keep adding on to.

And yeah, I kept and still have most of my ticket stubs going all the way back to the late 70's.

Ditto. Obviously not to make a deal of it in a thread that is clearly about people liking U2 but I've never had the slightest inclination to listen to them. Probably my loss but there you go.

On a loosely related note to this thread, any time Panda and KV wanna release a book about gigs they've been to, i'll buy a copy!

For me it was Sunday times and def LA weekly for the most part but I'd skim through a bam whenever I got home from a tower...Think an OC Sunday paper too...Was strange how like coach house and stuff wasn't in like the la weekly (gonna guess I was at that concrete blond show I see on top of your stub pile as I fucking loved Johnette) a lot of the shows I went to I'd hear about on kxlu and go places I'd never heard off... one thing I can't say for sure is if I saw a scream show of Jane's...I just can't place one for sure...First show I can place Jane's for sure was at fenders in Long Beach...Used to think first time I saw perry was at the golden bear but it doesn't jive with know shows unless it was psi com but that's a lil too early for me...Maybe a lost show, maybe not :noclue:

I think if we'd had every stub you must have seen far more concerts and I far more shitty club shows...I'd like to know how many bands I saw coming up that became big that I have no clue I saw now...Or how many shows we saw together gotta.be tons..I can only write the late 80's to 2000 section...I hardly ever see shows now, unless they are friends for the most part as I'd much rather play music with my spare time then watch it...Saw hellride on Sat and ended up playing all night after because I fucking had to after seeing them...So you get all the metal chapters (I can footnote a thing or two) and for the 21 century half of the book I'll just illustrate lol..Working title: "WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" Or "Blowing thousands on shows and all I got was this crappy tinnitus"
