True, and by 18 I meant school shootings just this year. We'll see an offering of thoughts and prayers, a candlelight vigil, and councilors in the school for the next week....then crickets. Murica

Or more prayers? Surely if everyone prayed 5 times a day, ONE of them would come into fruition? Right.....?

prayers while holding and buying more guns. that should do it.

I can't believe, that even after all these deaths, just this year alone, ALL of the USA isn't going "you know what? I think that's enough of our kiddies being killed in situations that are mostly avoidable. Let's really do something about this."

I guess it's OK for kids to die, until or unless it's the kids of gun maniacs, then it's just OK to blame maniacs with guns, not us normal gun owners. That place is fucken doomed. Put a fence around the whole thing, cease trading with the rest of us, and just do whatever you need.

The fierce resonse of the young adults has been refreshing, especially considering they're Florida's own. They, and all other young adults are products of the post columbine culture that recognizes this is a contiguous and omnipresent threat. They train for the eventuality. A national student walkout is being organized for March. A real thank you is in order. The colleagues of the 20 6 and 7 year old kids at Sandy Hook couldn't act and the adults chose not to.

Any right thinking, empathetic, intelligent, and just person does. Alt right is nothing short of thinly veiled organized crime. If I can be grateful for anything at this point it's this....he lacks the intelligence, savvy, refined duplicity, and cunning of putin so that his particular tyranny appeals to only 40 plus million in this third world country.

It would be awesome if someone could sit him down and ask him to explain how “thought and prayers” have any impact on the past, and future massacres.

I thought discourse was possible for a minute. But I'm convinced that debate is futile in part because of this, but not exclusively. Malignant narcissism and other disorders play a role.

I think there are very important questions that need to be answered about where political will can come from. We already know where power can come from, and where it exists. There is enough political power in the United States to solve a problem like this, even at this magnitude, but it is very difficult to change the course of entrenched norms. Politicians almost never do this, because it almost always ends badly for them. So, this suggests that the desire and effort to change things has to come first from somewhere else, with the aim of making it easier for politicians to adopt a progressive stance on this. This is too general to be very helpful, without a lot of people who care thinking about it very carefully and combining their efforts. But that is possible.

Big tobacco is an example of success, however insurance companies dovetailed with Clinton's war on them. The change in societal norms changed relatively quickly.....15 years or so. Granted, smokers were an easy target as their numbers and political clout were miniscule. Insurance companies would love to change norms where fast food and obesity are concerned as well, but the numbers are vast in the states as well as other taboo particulars such as body shaming. We'll see if we love kids more than double cheeseburgers. We haven't yet, but I see a new resolve with the next generation

And it should be noted there was an all out attack on tobaccos credibility. A close read of the nra and their methods needs to be exposed. Recipients of fat cash donations are already becoming an issue.

I am so confused about more bullets being the solution to bullets. WTF?? Trying to apply rational thinking, using an irrational idea, to a person acting irrationally.

there was an armed sheriff deputy at the school in FL.
he hid outside like a bitch for four minutes while the kid was shooting. he has been fired.

i'm sure an armed teacher would have confronted him though.

or when a group of teens overpower the teacher and take their weapon.
or when a teacher confronts an active shooter only to accidentally kill an innocent kid.
The lawsuit could cripple a school district. Not to mention that most school districts are barely getting by and funding is constantly being cut, how does a school pay for armed security at every school?
it's not even a pretend solution.

and this...
In May 2016, during the presidential election, Trump tweeted: “Crooked Hillary [Clinton] said that I want guns brought into the school classroom. Wrong!”

He couldn't even handle his job thats why he deserves to get fired but resigned instead. He was a pussy. You take a job as any security officer there are risks involved.

Uuhhmm? Really? Or are you being sarcastic?

Cause and effect.

You have to take away the cause, not try to react to the effect.
