- would you rather Perry died from an OD in late 1997, keeping Jane's legacy intact.
- or lived a reasonably happy life (though shitty output) well into old age.
I would rather have had Perry never met Etty, and just stuck with Porno For Pyros post-1997.

His voice (or lack thereof) is more suited to PFP material, yet he insists on wrecking Jane's songs instead for the cash grab.

The guy doesn't deserve to be dead for his poor choices, but it would have been nice to watch him age gracefully while churning out chill pothead island music, instead of mangling his face with plastic surgery and trying to be a House DJ during the rise of EDM/Dubstep.
Yep. I truly thought they'd do a Jane's reunion here and there for major events but Perry would gracefully age in to a bigger weirdo hippy and make acoustic shit with Peter D in to old age.

hasn't dave been sober for awhile now? he doesnt even smoke cigs anymore. i watch ink master with my mom lol she loves it.

i dont remember when i gave up, but i think it was just a lot of things piling up - perry being embarrassing, the shows all having the same setlists, TGEA sucking.

I fucked up the quotes too. Dn quit, then began smoking again. Someone mentioned watching him trying to sort words and it seemed to be in recent times. I know he was, for some time, but I also know he is/was under some medical procedures with LSD for depression I believe. For a drunk/junkie, ingesting mind altering substances is often a dangerous move

I don’t know if dave is sober or not ... he just talks like someone whosse lips are used to slurring so when he IS sober you still hear a bit of the slur ... like the lip muscle memory isn’t quite there ... just something i noticed from dating a few women with substance abuse issues

I havent' noticed any slurring when listening to Dark matter, he sounds like himself to me. He is skinnier than ever though, dunno if that's a sign he's using again

No.

He mentioned recently that he's been clean for several years. I don't remember the exact number though. 3? 5? Something like that.

He was however experimenting with microdosing under the care of a doctor, to treat his depression/trauma.

I don't think he's doing it anymore, but he had a positive experience.

He's mentioned that he stopped lifting weights and just does yoga now.

I can't find the older tweet about it, but here is a recent one where he mentions it:

Strays and UPSP were half good tmo, TPC was very bad but thinking it was not Jane's, I kept some faith.
TGEA is the one that buried my last hopes.

STRAYS killed janes dead .. what a shitty fucking album of poser metal .. chris cheney is etty on bass .. just sucks the life out of everything ... ninja was too little too late and tuning down made perry sound even worse ... erics douchery matched perrys .. trents demos blew chunks .. tgea album cover was the final embarassment .. can't even the speak the band name out loud without shame after that .. i get my janes fix more from ink master now than anything musical any band member has done in 25 years .. i have fun listening to dave try not to slur his words and seeing what his new hairdo and monster high doll outfits look like ... i would rather perry be alive but he seems like a miserable guy to me .. some people are so poor all they have is money .. he will probably od soon enough .. takes a lot of drugs to put up with a spoiled brat hallow whore like etty .. she will play the widow role taking cues from yoko and courtney on how to pretend u didn't kill your husband ... timing seems right .. she is all over this new perry album just like double fantasy and milk and honey or when kurt wrote live through this right before c love offed him
couldn't have said it better myself

funny thing is I did say it and got banned from multiple boards back then for saying it

Dave Navarro was the first traitor to the spirit of the band, playing with Cristina Aguilera, Puff Daddy, Michael Jackson.

Perry was still weirdo bizarre during Enit or even during SYTBS, but Dave was on sale for big bands, RHCP Gun's'Roses and media coverage.

At that time I didn't want to say I liked Jane's Addiction because kids answered me: "Oh yes, Dave Navarro, he's cool".

When i saw Carmen Electra dancing in the True Nature video i knew it was all over.
I never thought i would see a "Baywatch" lifeguard on Janes video, music was ok but it was disgusting to see wives dance like sluts since I had seen the art of Casey Niccoli infused in that legendary band.

For me, it slowly decreased after Strays but this is TPC that brought the first nail.
However, I was still interested in what Perry could do (although songs were getting worse and worse)
I also remember having expectations with the 2008 reunion but the shows I saw on YT were pretty boring (OK, except the Sidney gig filmed by Moshcam)
Since that, I don't give a damn shit about their music anymore.
TGEA is simply not what I want to hear. It has never be.
I keep on playing Triple X and GGU.
Only those two.

Wild that he did that but turned down the opportunity to play bass in Tool before they did Aenima.

First crack was getting some live show from Vegas in like 2002 and they did an instrumental Pink Floyd cover and while interesting, I had concerns. Felt like a bloated rock star move

Then I heard Bring the Mood, and the douche chills began.

When they cut the original ending bit of True Nature—I was perplexed, clearly they weren’t making good artist choices.

Strays was way too RAWK for me, drumming was typical and boring...felt like they took all the cred they had and cashed in to be a big rock band....And it only halfway worked...if that.

I followed them, but without fervor

Then it all just went down hill...

Sat Party album cover was a massive warning sign ( again terrible artistic choices )

Perry Doing JA tunes with that band the String Cheese Incident....horrible and sad.

Cabinet Boxset was cool...Reunion was great to finally see Eric with them live...No new tunes was the Final nail for me.

It was obvious they didn’t care anymore Or Perry didn’t...

Now they are a curiosity. Love 1.0 and listening to those shows and albums occasionally...Being a fan was big part of my music identity growing up.

Now, they are just a band I used to love

Ya I agree with your post a lot...many solid points I related to

Vegas...when they started leaking new songs live...and I heard "true nature"...and 1000% the "into the flesh" cover turned my head to ok Dave has some control now...(I wasn't happy when I heard what suffer some sounded like then either) then the next show after they played bring the mood....I remember leaving the Vegas show with a friend who had never seen Jane's and being bummed for him that's what he finally saw...

pretty sure I only saw them twice after that...Wiltern New year's Eve show the last time I payed to see them (also my narcotic sobriety date! (It was new years after all I'd been clean for two years till that night )...Etty on stage, more covers, bad opening bands...the end was very near....then that followed by the la cita club show where they let in less than 20 people from the line and filled the place with the rich people who they let in the back...the A,B,C,D listers while their die hards, who they said the show was for, got fucked (I will always give them credit for trying to make right and holding a show for the fans next, but they should have never made the other show public if it was an industry show) as I left that club show with Eric on bass and another friend who had never seen them but loved them since the kxlu days...he summed it up perfect...."that was fun...at least I have an idea of what they were" exactly, I've never seen them since

Perry's new box set just sends douchebag shivers down my spine.

How could the Perry I thought I knew sell out so obviously like that?

It's weird, people don't normally change that much. I mean we're all here just like we were 20 years ago but somehow Perry just transformed over the years from the coolest person ever to literally the biggest douchebag ever.

How does that happen?

I think if Perry ate a mushroom now his head would explode when he realized with deep profundity what an ass he has become.

Not sure Perry changed more than most

Guy has a family, I assume he’s rich beyond my wildest dreams but who knows.

The box set is weird, but I’m sure it’s a way for him to control those recordings, and later in life Perry has seemed to need validation that HE is the creative force behind everything.

This box set is more propping that up. Older Perry has gotten the more he seems to to view JA something that drags him down. He seems to use it for money and leverage—bjt his heart is in all the weird solo stuff that, he seems to crave be more relevant that his past.

It’ll never happen—but that seems to have driven him since like the early to mid 2000s

I hate to say it, but probably Etty reinforces that “he’s more than Jane’s Addiction, you can do stuff better without them”

At lot of what Diabolik and KV said factors into my arc with Janes.

With me, I was already losing my passion for the band once it was public they were breaking up after the Lollapalooza tour in '91. Add to that, I thought that last V1.0 show I caught at Irvine Meadows really wasn't great compared to the 1990 Palladium or '89 JA Ford Theater shows I had previously seen. Although my opinion of Deconstruction has greatly improved over the years, when it was first released, I did not like it at all, mostly due to Eric's vox. I probably listened to the 3 JA studio albums half a dozen times between '93-'97. They just fell completely off my radar. To be fair, this period was when I finally settled down, was working 2 jobs, got married and we had our son so there was a lot of other stuff going on during the mid-90's and my interest in rock music in general was at a nadir.

The Relapse/Enit show in '97 in San Francisco greatly rekindled my feelings that there was a lot left in the tank but that quickly faded when nothing came of it. The 2001 Hollywood Bowl show with Hole opening really killed my hardcore interest in the band - aside from the cool opening bit with Kettle Whistle and the P4P/Perry solo stuff, the show was meh. After that, Janes was in the category of "Bands I'll see if it's convenient" like The Cult, Guns n' Roses, Pretenders, etc.

I probably would have skipped the NYE show in 2002 at The Wiltern but I wanted to do *something* for NYE and that was the logical choice. And yeah, like KV says, that was a mostly lame show with Vegas Perry in full bloom. I was shocked how stick-in-the-mud boring Cheney was on bass. I initially liked Strays but it was a mostly generic "rawk" album that didn't hold my attention. I didn't bother to see them again until the run of Hollywood club shows in '08/'09 and the '09 NINJA tour which I thought was a mostly mediocre show with Eric already in sullen "I Want Out" mode.

I haven't bothered to see them again since 2012.
