favicon

#1 Post by intertwoven » Fri Nov 16, 2018 8:11 pm

Could this board get a favicon (that little logo that shows up in the web-browser)? This link doesn't have a favicon (just default page icon) and it sort of throws off my bookmark bar (1st world problem, I know).
Maybe it's asking too much, but just putting it out there.

here you go, just change the extension to a .ico file and put in the root folder of the forum.

I was wondering what that little pic was. I didn't know it had a name.

I like it. Good idea, Intertwoven! :thumb:

Here's the ANR logo shrunken down to favicon size.

It was updated to the ANR last night but you have to wait for it to update unless you clear your cache.

This is only for the default profile. If you use one of the others I'm not going to change all of them.

You don't have to clear your cache. You can "hard-refresh" using SHIFT+F5. Also, favicons have nothing to do with phpBB. It's updated site-wide.

:noclue: why did I have to edit some phpbb stuff and place it in the profile folder??

Ah, because phpBB wants to do it for you. phpBB predates modern CMS (content management systems, like Wordpress), but they've been sort of turning into a stripped down version of one, where the CMS controls all the stuff that you used to have to do directly.

If you have direct access to your server's www/public_html folder, the current favicon is always located there: http://aintnoright.org/favicon.ico

You can just change that file directly, and since it always has the name "favicon.ico", phpBB won't know the difference.

The <link> code you had to add should be standard HTML boilerplate in the first place. I'd guess they get you to update it just in case you put the favicon in a different folder than the one it defaults to (but honestly, that's badly programmed -- you shouldn't have to edit anything). It looks like because you only add it to the header for one style at a time, you'd have to add it for all of them. But, I can confirm that I can see the right favicon using all of board styles, so the other styles must have that link code already.

Never mind... you don't even need the <link> code: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/664 ... age-x-icon
