Times I saw them they were pretty fucking great live :noclue:
Maybe they're hit-or-miss. I was at this show, and the sound was terrible, energy was off... I dunno.

 Yeah, my thinking is: why would they get better? I can just listen to their three good albums, just like JA, and go see better live bands.

I couldn't agree more.

It pains me that the heroes of my youth are all so crummy now.

But there are other bands.

For me, it seems even bands that I got into in just the past 10 years are already starting to go down the toilet. Arcade Fire and Muse being two prime examples. I had super high hopes for Savages but it doesn't seem they are in any hurry to do album #3, and taking 3+ years between albums with the members already doing stuff with other bands isn't a great way to maintain any creative spark when you're still a relatively young band.

But yeah, all my bands/artists of days long gone are either jokes, retired or dead. The one lone holdout of my long time favorites still doing ok on a personal and artistic front is Killing Joke and I think the clock is really ticking for those guys.

Yeah, it's been a bummer to see Arcade Fire get crummy.

War on Drugs just keep getting better though, so there's that (for me) at least.

LCD Soundsystem also came back with a strong album.

Not too much else out there I'm excited about. Mostly hip hop I suppose. Run the Jewels, Gambino.

Some indie stuff.

Wilco Wilco Wilco and more Wilco. Tweedy's book and new solo CD will get me through December. I'll try to see Peter Hook, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Echo and the Bunnymen anytime they are around. Other than I really won't see any other bands. Sad!

how does the guy who made some of the best album covers of all time put out TGEA which might actually be the worst album cover of all time .
Really?? I think the TGEA isn't much worse than the RdlH-cover. It's made in the same spirtit and I think the TGEA-cover is at least way better than the Strays-cover. Isn't this a case of judging "the cover by the book"? Artisticly RdlH is monumental but the cover origins in the same or a neighbouring artistic realm as the TGEA-cover imho. NS is my absolute favourite.

Tweedy wrote this after another patient had related his story about witnessing his dad kill his mom.

But when he related this guilt to another patient, that patient was offended:
“Listen to me, motherfucker, listen.” Getting right up in my face. “Mine ain’t about yours. And yours ain’t about mine. We all suffer the same. You don’t get to decide what hurts you. You just hurt. Let me say my shit, and you say your shit, and I’ll be there for you. Okay?”
In this telling, the man offering absolution isn’t drunk, but rather in recovery. There are no bombs. But the underlying story is the same. Tweedy worries his damage is unearned given the wider world’s problems. Yet still, it’s there, and it must be dealt with either way."

Kinda powerful

ok I am definitely picking up Tweedy's book now. Thanks for that.

I have been finding myself in a similar place with my favorite artists for awhile - the vast majority are broken up, members deceased, or they lost the spark and/or they are total clowns as human beings. Glad I got to see many of them when I did, but an empty feeling persists nonetheless.

I second Wilco... I hope there never break up. and I am seeing Slayer once more in May.

I would personally rate the cover of Ritual very high probably even a 10. TGEA i'd rate pretty low maybe a 1.
I saw a huge poster for Ritual in the window at the record store about a month before the album was released and was already feeling the vibe. Then when I played the cd the music re-enforced how cool the cover looked.
The cover for TGEA I saw after hearing only End to the Lies and thought it looked lame.

SP in 2000's still made some good songs
Last Shiny So Bright.. nothing great but still a decent album that you can listen without feel ashame as for TGEA

SP>JA.
I hate to say this, because every band admired and respected JA as they were different, unique, special band, but now JA artistically are 4 dead guys with zero spark of creativity

Yeah, but I feel about that the way I feel about Bauhaus's "Go Away White" or the Manic Street Preachers' 2000s albums without the original singer. They're not horrible, but they're not anything I would choose to put on to enjoy those bands.

The Pixies, on the other hand, have released some really incredible music in the past decade. I even prefer some of their new songs to some of their old stuff (Andro Queen, Greens & Blues, and a few others).

Andro Queen is one of my favorite Pixies songs.

Also - Dino jr has continued to churn out great shit. Farm is a phenomenal album.

Yeah, I agree about SP -- I only went to that show because I had tickets to the whole Virgin Festival. Bjork the day before was incredible.

I think the Pixies survived not having Kim because Frank hasn't stopped making music and as a band they've somehow managed to keep the best of the old sound without becoming boring. I guess it's possible that the Quiet-Loud-Quiet formula is way easier to maintain than the complex weirdness of Jane's Addiction. Plus Frank's voice hasn't totally gone to shit.

Every new Muse song I hear, I think: "What the fuck happened to Muse?"

That singer guy just seems to write the same electronic song over and over and over again for like 3 albums now.

I can't totally abide all the Pixies love. I don't think they're hurting their legacy, but it's not like they're making real compelling music. Minus a few songs, its ok at best.

Manics haven't lost a singer. They lost a lyricist - technically a lyricist / "lead guitarist" but one who, in the finest punk tradition, couldn't really play guitar.
