He's Cool. She's Cool

#1 Post by SR » Sun Dec 06, 2020 7:35 am

So I just finished watching Taylor's master class on drumming. And I was reminded of how much I love Pat Smear. Not so much his playing, which is fine, but his presence. It's the the thing endlessly described as "it" I suppose. I've always bee a bit hypnotized by him...he's just fucking cool. So a lot is debated here on playing, but rock and roll is more too. At least for me. So here are some players who are just other worldly cool to me....yours?

Chrissie Hynde
David Bowie
Prince
Gail Ann Dorsey
Alex Van Halen (very recent to my list)
David Lindley
Porl Thomson
Eva Cassidy
Christine McVie
Jack White

Confidence outside of normal.

Like way outside of normal - and real confidence.
Not the fake kind that a lot of "famous" people display -
That is the it factor for me.

Dave Grohl is very confident, but very normal. That's fine, but no it at all there for me.

Perry had it for a couple years in the last millennium.

Also, when you have a duo or trio with those qualities, that's where real magic happens.
Lately i've been smitten with Paul Barker, Bill Rieflin and Al Jourgensen

Jaz Coleman/Geordie Walker
Kathleen Hanna
David Byrne
John Lyndon
Siouxsie Sioux
and I am sure others.

Talent has very little to do with it. Sure, talent helps but it's mostly the it for me. Also there is a period of time where this applies. People rarely if ever have the it for more than a decade or so at best. They change music, time moves on and music changes to conform and that's what they did.

And I think that people have a period of time where artists click.
1978 - 1992 (well, more than a decade) is my decade where everything clicked.

Kate Bush

Bjork

Forgot about those....would totally make my list. :thumb:

And the one artist that would also make my list, but doesn't fall within '78-'92 would be Juice WRLD

I don't do much experimentation with music listening, so I am sure there would be others but I don't have the patience to find them.... :bored:

Daniel Lanois Arty? Really interesting. I know him obviously from U2, but saw a doc he did with Peter Gabriel on the making of So. He is a formidable presence as is PG.

Django was cool and could shred even with only a couple fingers.

Prince is an obvious one for most of us.

D'Angelo exudes cool

Django R....good call. I gotta add Johnny Cash. Since Coivid, we had to convert our garage into a gym, music and cycle room. I got the iconic "flip off" photo of JC to hang in there. It inspired me to look up others flippin the bird. SO many. Bowie, Al from Ministry, Leland Sklar (who just put out a book of colleagues and fans flippin), and more. It going to be the theme in the garage. Bowies is on the way.

Billy is the man and he acts like he is not Billy while he is in public which is even funnier, reading that article now.

That is cool. He seems impervious to the ego traps of fame. I watched a doc on ZZ. The 3 got together and did a standard r&b jam (the name I can't recall) and they all "felt" it. They also seemed a bit surpised by their apex of fame in the 80's

If its the doc on Netflix I worked on it, but Billy, Dusty, and Frank are total down to earth not rock stars. This area of this state has so many cool artists (not just music) its fucking insane how backwards other spots are. I invite everyone out to the Carrizo property and it amazes me how all of the people are actually cool. Except Rev Horton that dude is an Alex Jones loving nut job.
