“I’m trying just to see the bigger picture; be the bigger man”
It’s hard not to focus on the negative when it comes to an artist that you love disappointing you or falling short creatively. Especially when we have a platform to run our mouths. But this recent development of both Jane’s and Porno being resurrected has me reflecting and feeling all warm and fuzzy.
So I am proposing a “challenge” of sorts. Let’s revisit the reunion albums (Strays, The Great Escape Artist). The catch is that you’re only allowed to say nice things about these albums. I know the majority of us have our issues with them; I have many. But I’m curious to hear what people like about these albums (in general, specific songs, or elements within songs). Again, the “rule” is that you can’t say anything negative.

I oddly like that song, "The Riches", especially that part that goes....
And when the hunt is over, kiss me on my liiiiiiiiiiiips!!!!
Kisses!!!!!
that part always kinda gets me, I'm not sure why, but it does.

I’ve always really liked I’ll Hit You Back. It seems like a song they could’ve done with Eric had he not left before doing TGEA. It has an interesting guitar line, a cool groove in the chorus, and a great bridge.
I also like the odd time feel of wrong girl. At the very least it’s a cool instrumental

With a little bit of a different arrangement, Curiosity Kills could be a pretty decent Greg Puciato or Black Queen song

I really like both albums, altough they have some corky lyrics that I think that could have been way better.
Musically, both are great. TGEA sounds amazing and has that darkness vibe that I like. I like that all Jane's studio albums are different, and that I have a different one for a different mood. Of course that Nothing's and Ritual are unique, but those are different animals.

I like Words right out of my mouth. its a good jam.... this is cool thread, I haven't heard TGEA in years honestly, pretty much Strays too. Just played TGEA through... It definitely has some moments, musically, that are darkish and cool

Strays:
Wrong Girl is pretty cool without the vocals
True Nature with its original ending and production could have been great.
Everybody's Friend sounds a lot like Jane's Addiction.
Just Because is inoffensive, and doesn't piss me off to be a well known Jane's song.
TGEA:
The little musical part between the verse and the chorus on Irresistible Force is pretty fucking cool.
The bridge that starts at around 4 minutes in to Splash actually sounds like Jane's Addiction.
Underground could have been an incredible song, much like True Nature, had it not been over produced in to sounding like Bon Jovi crap. I'll still contend that song had a ton of potential. Cool video as well.

I really liked the snippets/videos, leading up to TGEA... what happened with that? Some of that sounded awesome!
Honorable mention to Dave's badass Katt Williams hair, in the IF video.... so tight.

I never actually thought Strays was that bad.
I like it for what it is. A good rock album.
The killer tracks are True Nature, Just Because and Price I Pay (not much love for that track here?)
When I listen(ed) to the cd (it's been a long time) i don't really skip any tracks (maybe Everybody's Friend).
Travelled to Amsterdam to see them on the Strays tour and I thought they were great.

I have to say that I listened to strays a lot when it came out and there are lots of moments which I especially love, including the “kiss me on my lips line”.
I also dig a lot of the Great Escape songs (although not so much the Duff ones). The digs at Eric make me feel uncomfortable though.
I am really excited about this though.
I’ve never understood the lack of productivity from all these guys. They all live in LA and they know that together they make really special music. I don’t just mean Jane’s but the whole family, I wish there were more collaborations with Watt, Fishbone, RHCP, etc just for the pure fuckoffness of it all.

Just Because. When I first heard it, I thought - what a great rock song!
Sounds nothing like Jane’s, mind.

I really like Underground. Broken People and Irresistible force are ok songs. The song Strays is ok.
Re: “I’m trying just to see the bigger picture; be the bigger man”
I guess, listening after a long time…
Strays-
Strays, The Riches, Hypersonic, To Match The Sun
TGEA-
Curiosity Kills, Twisted Tales, Broken People, Words….
Not Necessarily Jane’s ish, but good songs

Pretty sure that’s the vast majority consensus (myself included). But there are aspects of the reunion albums that are interesting or have merit, despite the accompanying flaws (of which there are many). My knee jerk reaction is that I hate those two records…but if I judge them on their own, outside of their earlier, far superior discography…parts of them are cool. I would never give them 0 out of 10.
Re: “I’m trying just to see the bigger picture; be the bigger man”
I wouldn't rate them that low...but anyway cheers lol
Re: “I’m trying just to see the bigger picture; be the bigger man”
Interesting, just heard it... mmm, I guess? Maybe a little? Not really, but I get it...
Re: “I’m trying just to see the bigger picture; be the bigger man”
I wasnt implying they ripped them off theyre just similar songs.
Re: “I’m trying just to see the bigger picture; be the bigger man”
Price I Pay and the solo in Strays were really good live
Re: “I’m trying just to see the bigger picture; be the bigger man”
When the earlier version of strays leaked and they played at Irving Plaza, I felt juiced and as if they were motivated to play well and to play new songs well. That moment remains.
TGEA seemed kind of rocking when i first heard it. Again there was a show in NYC, on some pier in Williamsburg, where they played a lot of the songs. And they seemed motivated to be original and creative and good.
But especially the Irving Plaza show. That felt real and optimistic.

Call me crazy, but I thought the TGEA shows felt more like Jane's than NINJA. Perry was in full on Liberace mode during NINJA, and there was nothing Eric could do to fix it.tubro wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 6:48 pmWhen the earlier version of strays leaked and they played at Irving Plaza, I felt juiced and as if they were motivated to play well and to play new songs well. I agree... I saw two of the NINJA shows, one good, one pretty bad, just really lazy... And the TGEA tour show that I saw, was better than the good one...Hokahey wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 7:28 pmCall me crazy, but I thought the TGEA shows felt more like Jane's than NINJA. Totally agree about the tours!
During the NIN/JA show I saw, it was like watching a grandpa experiencing a late-in-life sexual awakening ; the band was good. While Perry at TGEA show felt a little more like the Perry of the old days; he had some teeth/aggression and the old stage presence. More frenetic!
