Fuck it - have another...

Much prefer Josh on this song to Troy.
Yeah, it’s fine.

Man I don’t know

He sounds great on Then She Did and Oceansize

He was ripping the solos on that one. Again it’s wild and it make anxious because I’m so used to note perfect performances

But it’s a lot of fun

Excellent. Perry sounds terrific; he’s clearly still into it. Josh isn’t a great guitar player. And Then She Did... is super-weak, like his clean tone is totally dead, no chiming chorused sustain. I’d still like to hear his solo on Three Days.

Agreed. He doesn't have the sound for the harder edged stuff either it seems. It also sounds like they've tuned down a whole step for then she did

I think Josh gets work because he's a reliable team player, who's in the know, the go-to guy. I thought the same when he was in the Chilli peppers. :noclue:

He’s the Chris Chaney of guitarists. Stable, boring guy without any problems who can play, albeit pedestrian.

JK rose to it on Beach, and close on Ocean. His Three Days contribution on the SP tour is what sold me on him, so I want to see what he's doing now with it. He seems to shrink when he's the guy live. He's adept enough to learn the parts, for sure, but he appears to want to bring a charged elegance to 1.0 songs. I prefer Troys approach...aggressive and untamed is what I've always felt in NS and RDLH. For all the comps to dull players, his creativity is on full display in Dot Hacker and the RHCP. EA has known it for a long time.

That interview with Perk floored me when without any hesitation he ascribed long covid as the reason for DN's absence. :noclue:

Yeah — you may not like his playing or look 🙄 or whatever..

But he’s the opposite of Chaney, his own music is inventive and he’s clearly bringing more to the table than just stability.

On the last Morrissey track that was released “Rebels Without Applause” — he played guitar on it and he’s doing a fantastic Johnny Marr. So I won’t be surprised when his guitar parts fit great whatever they are doing in studio

This was recorded during the SP tour and “long Covid” was what they were saying at the time.

It wouldn’t surprise me if there were some contractual reason they have to maintain the long Covid line.

Then again, it might be true.

Yep - he is no Chaney, thank God! He is a little goofy on stage, but you can tell he is super into the music and is feeling it. He has energy and presence, just not DN presence - but then who does?? For me, he worked. And I think some of his Chili Peppers stuff is really good and underrated. Speaking of Johnny Marr, he reminds me a lot of British indie guitarists - looser and more textural than a rock guitar player. We have just been blessed w/ Dave, who is the best of both!

Agree with all of this. It’s wild that I prefer Troy at this point, given Josh’s reverence for the material and his allegedly more sonic approach to guitaring. I’ve taught high schoolers with more musicality and chops.

Actually, he reminds me of Chaney— the mayonnaise sandwich on white bread aspect, anyway. Chaney is 1,000,000x the player.

Anyway, I’m sure everyone is tired of hearing me bitch about guitarists, but this is where we are in 2023. Plus everyone has their thing.

I was pretty harsh on Troy not representing certain parts, but in retrospect, he brought a ferocity that suits the material and which helped enliven it after the by-numbers Chaney era. Josh has a wah.

I thought Troy was great to .. he brought a danger and edge to the sound. As EA mentioned - a sort of working class grit.

Klinghoffer always reminds me of a poor man's Johnny Greenwood. :noclue: Sorry. I've never heard anything the guy has recorded (guitar or otherwise) that has been memorable, interesting or technically impressive... and i've tried. Other than his contributions to Martyn's solo demos - which i thought where great.

Good luck to the guy though, I'm sure they'll gel more as the tour goes on, and he's certainly into it. It could be far, far worse I suppose ... we could have gotten slash or some cheesy old rocker like that :hehe:

Yeh.. enough bitching from me. I'm just looking forward to seeing new shows pop up. Hoping they announce a London date soon

Where the board stands today on JA guitar players:

Dave: too cock rock and was never good or important to the band

Troy: sucks

Josh: sucks

As I see it, we now have two options: lobby for the return of Ed Dobrydnio, or I will step up and get it done for the band and do the board proud.

Fuck Dave, Josh, and Troy.

We need someone who isn’t a career musician and can really bring a rawness and edge to Jane’s. I try to practice three days a week but am not always successful. I’ll answer the call if given the opportunity

Bring back Ed!

I like a Troy/Josh combo for 2023...or Maybe Dave will actually want to play again.

Should Pete join the band?

Also, what's everyone's favorite bootleg from 1988? And your favorite Perry-ism from the 1989 bootlegs?

😂

It could have been Gilby! Or Nuno, but Perry already burned that bridge.

I worry that if Dave does come back, (which he will not, he’s done) but if he does, it will just go back to sounding average at best. The best being, a surprisingly good show with Cheney playing, or at worst, NINJA. I’ll be honest, I haven’t ever really considered any of the post 1991 shows, as JA shows at all. At best, they’ve been good, sporadically. Sacramento 1997, was great. 2001 Mountain View was good, 2003 Lolla was cool, and surprisingly enough, the TGEA show, in Clearwater, was great. The rest I’ve seen, have been ok enough, sometimes, to really bad other times. Basically, I’ve been saying “This is the last time…” since like 2001. I totally wasn’t going to go to see the SP tour, just thought it would be more of the same, and I can’t stomach SP, to begin with. What made me go more than Eric being back, was that DN was not there. It was just a new element, a curiosity. And EA seemed really into the idea, actually…. And they are my favorite band, so it’s a hard habit to break….

Damn… that show was, without any question, the best show I have seen them do since 1991. That’s a fact. And I love TVL to begin with, so while different and chunky, and a little sloppy, it felt like JA, for the first time, since they were an actual band. Klinghoffer played on like 3-4 songs then, the 5 piece was wild!!!!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

That coupled with the PFP show I saw in LA, I am genuinely excited again about them… Eric is happy, it rocked, they were all good! So I have the Palladium show coming up, I guess just with Klinghoffer. I’m stoked. I think I would be less so, if DN were just playing, oddly enough. He hasn’t been into it since what 2001? And you can tell, note perfect or not. I’m in, so yeah, It’s a great and interesting time to be a JA fan again, I think.

Same.

I get there’s some hard liners that can’t get past Dave not being there…but oh well.

I think he’s the best choice for 3.0

Because he’s not DN. I guess some people want to see a lesser version of something, simply because everyone is original. NINJA proved that. Maybe that tour would have been better, with a different guitar player??? Who knows? I wish that DN WAS there, but also, if he’s not into it, what good is it? This version of the band, while not original, proves something, it proves that I’d rather them be with someone different, than without EA. He is really the most important factor, to me.
